Gary Neville Postpones England Duty After Valencia Fans Chant for His Exit

Gary Neville has delayed his reunion with the England squad after fans were heard chanting against the Valencia manager at the Mestalla Stadium in Sunday's 2-0 defeat by Celta Vigo.

Spanish newspaper AS confirmed the Mestalla chants referred to the team boss as a "donkey," adding "Gary go now."

The Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel provided quotes from Neville, who said in Sunday's post-match press conference that he had put off his decision to join up with the England squad prior to the upcoming friendlies:

"

I've just spoken to Roy Hodgson, I'm going to stay back in Valencia, I feel it's the right thing to do.

I will go on Thursday afternoon, the players have got a break on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so from that point of view I'm only going to miss one and a half sessions.

Obviously it's not an ideal situation, in respect to the fact that before I came here I was the assistant coach for the national team of England, with 60 million people, but I understand the two or three million people in Valencia deserve my time this week.

The last thing I want levelled at me when I leave here is that is Gary Neville lacks commitment, because it's not something that's ever been said about me in my life.

"

Sunday's home loss was Los Che's third consecutive defeat in La Liga, leaving the club sitting 14th in the table and just six points away from the relegation zone with eight games remaining.

BBC Sport's Andy West posted footage provided by Spanish outlet Superdeporte, which showed Valencia's home support rallying against its manager, who has won only three of his 16 La Liga games in charge of the club:

Neville retained his role as England assistant manager after being appointed Valencia head coach at the beginning of December 2015, but pressure is now mounting against the former Manchester United defender.

Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney illustrated exactly how intense the calls have been for Neville to step down from his role as Valencia chief, not to mention club owner Peter Lim being urged to fire the tactician:

Neville's first managerial role is verging on disaster status—if not there already—and there's a chance the Englishman may not make it to the end of the season at the helm.

Per Mokbel, he admitted that the non-competitive circumstances of England's upcoming games meant his Valencia commitments must take precedence for the time being:

"

I have to say that I have dual roles at this moment in time. I was an English coach for three and a half years and I love doing that but they are friendly matches. They are very important matches for England but we have three important days training here.

I have come to love this club and city, I want to give my all to the club, they deserve nothing less.

"

The Three Lions will face Germany in Berlin on Saturday before travelling back to Wembley for a clash against the Netherlands the following Tuesday.

Both matches will be considered key outings for England as Hodgson looks to piece together his best squad ahead of this summer's European Championship in France.

Neville may play down the importance of the friendly encounters, but questions will inevitably be asked as to whether the underfire Valencia chief is up to handling the responsibilities of both positions.
