Djokovic defeated Nadal for the 10th time in their last 11 meetings, winning 7-6 (5), 6-2 to clinch a berth in the final.
The world No. 1 weathered a battle of a first set, going up 4-1 before Nadal powered back to even the score at 5-5. Djokovic forced a tiebreak and claimed the set when Nadal sent a backhand into the net.
Kelyn Soong of the Washington Post noted how thrilling the matches between these two greats have been over the years:
From there, the Serbian cruised, and the Spaniard struggled. Djokovic went up 4-2 in the second set when Nadal netted on an unforced error. He then took the next two games to win his 25th match against arguably his biggest rival.
The crowd gave the winner a roaring ovation, per the BNP Paribas Open:
Djokovic wore Nadal down Saturday. Even though the world No. 5 kept it close in the first set, going down after that duel seemed to take a toll.
Howard Bryant of ESPN The Magazine noted how Djokovic found success Saturday:
Djokovic can win his fifth BNP Paribas Open title with another victory Sunday against world No. 14 Raonic.
Raonic halted arguably the most exciting player of the tournament in Goffin, who entered Saturday’s match on the heels of two major upsets.
But Goffin met his match against the Canadian, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The slender Belgian didn’t go down without a fight, though. Raonic earned the 10 aces he reeled off to advance to a career-best 14-1 this year.
The 6'5" Raonic converted on 63 percent of his first serves, which averaged 131 mph. Goffin, who is six inches shorter, struggled to keep up.
Djokovic, however, will be a taller challenge.
Post-Match Reaction
Djokovic spoke about maintaining his composure despite losing his lead in the gritty first set, per Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times.
"l have been trained to do that," he said. "I work hard to be able to come up with the best game when it's the most needed. ... I'm just glad to overcome this challenge that is one of the greatest in sport, as it always is playing against Rafa.”
Djokovic elaborated on his assessment of his performance afterward, via the ATP World Tour:
Nadal put an optimistic spin on his overall performance this week in Indian Wells, per the BNP Paribas Open:
Tennis reporter Carole Bouchard believes it was the type of performance that could catapult Nadal forward in 2016:
Raonic was happy with his victory but also critical of some of his struggles, per the Canadian Press (h/t Sportsnet).
"I feel like I did the things right. I lost my way a little bit in the second set," he said. "It’s important to me to be able to recognize that and get the things back on the right track and play and finish off with some good tennis like I did."
He also looked forward to his meeting with Djokovic.
"I have a big challenge ahead of me, but I have been pretty good this year at finding solutions," Raonic said, per the Canadian Press.
