"[Guardiola] has instructed Txiki Begiristain to bring an end to [Kompany]’s Manchester City career by placing the club’s captain on the transfer market," reported the Sun's Phil Cadden.
"City’s incoming manager wants to overhaul the club’s defence, calculating that it is better to clear the decks for a new central-defensive partnership rather than keep Kompany on board," Cadden's report added.
Previously a towering and calming presence in the City defence, Kompany's form and effectiveness have been decreased after a string of muscular injuries.
The centre-back has started only 12 of City's 29 Premier League games this season, leaving the inconsistent likes of Eliaquim Mangala, Martin Demichelis and Nicolas Otamendi to fill his role, per WhoScored.com.
Belgium international Kompany picked up yet another injury while in Champions League action midweek and is set to be out for a month, per BBC Sport.
His troubles with fitness have affected his form, and he is no longer the guaranteed top performer that he used to be.
Guardiola reportedly wants to move Kompany on, not least to rule out the possibility of "dressing room dissent" when he brings in his replacement, with Athletic Bilbao's Aymeric Laporte the No. 1 target, per Cadden.
Kompany has been a figurehead at City in their recent era of Premier League glory, and he has lifted two Premier League titles with the club.
However, his time may seemingly be up at the Etihad upon the arrival of Guardiola.
