Barcelona Fans Want to Face Real Madrid in Champions League Quarter-Finals

Tom WebbMar 17, 2016

Barcelona secured a safe passage through to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday with a 5-1 aggregate win over Arsenal.

There, they will face one of eight teams, including Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich and perceived outsiders Wolfsburg and Benfica.

But with the quarter-final draw set to take place on Friday, Barca fans would rather face a different opponent: archrivals Real Madrid.

In a poll carried out by Spanish newspaper Sport, 49 percent of Barcelona fans said they'd rather face Zinedine Zidane's side than anyone else left in the competition. That's a fair chunk more than the 25 percent who would choose to play Benfica and the 20 percent who picked Wolfsburg.

Real have endured a difficult 2015/16 campaign, the lowest point coming in a 4-0 Clasico defeat in November. With 12 points separating them from Barca at the top of La Liga, the Champions League represents their last realistic chance of silverware this season.

Is it that Barca fans want to end Real Madrid's season early? Or do they just consider them the weakest opposition in the hat? Either way, it's a draw that would be welcomed just about everywhere else...except maybe (Real) Madrid.
