Ian Wright Advocates Jose Mourinho to Replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal Manager

Arsenal legend Ian Wright would love to see former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho replace Arsene Wenger as manager of the Gunners, although he admitted such a move is unlikely to ever happen.

Making an appearance on BT Sport's broadcast of Arsenal's 3-1 UEFA Champions League loss against Barcelona on Wednesday, the former striker said (h/t Charles Perrin of the Daily Express): "Arsenal fans would be up in arms. But I love Jose. If he went to Arsenal, it wouldn’t be something that I would be against. I can’t see it ever happening though."

He also believes this might be Wenger's last season in charge of the club, unless things change quickly:

Mourinho and club legend Wenger have clashed in the past on multiple occasions, adding to the animosity that already exists between Chelsea and Arsenal, per Sport Magazine (h/t MailOnline's Anthony Hay).

The rivalry between the two managers has seen some fantastic highlights. Per BBC Sport, Mourinho infamously labeled Wenger a “specialist in failure” in 2014, and the two have even got physical on the sidelines:

Arsenal fans have never been too fond of Mourinho, and when he returned to the Premier League in 2013 and asked his team to play defensive football, the animosity grew.

Wenger's future again looks insecure following a dreadful week for Arsenal, which saw the club crash out of the FA Cup and Champions League. They've fallen behind in the Premier League race as well, and the Gunners are in real danger of finishing the season without any silverware.

As shared by KICKTV, their record in Europe's top club competition has been dreadful of late, which is not a good look for Wenger:

Few expected Arsenal to beat Barcelona, but as unfair as it may be, Wednesday's loss adds to the narrative that Wenger is no longer capable of winning major titles. Back-to-back FA Cup wins were a great consolation prize, but it's been over a decade since the Gunners last captured England's top honour, the Premier League.

The 2015-16 campaign has presented Arsenal with perhaps their best opportunity in years, as several top contenders have struggled. The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are usually expected to beat the Gunners to the title, but they've all faltered at some point this season.

Instead, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur sit ahead of Arsenal in the standings, and if either of those clubs beats the Gunners to the title, it will be yet another mark against Wenger.

TV personality, Arsenal fan and unofficial spokesperson of the “Wenger Out” group, Piers Morgan, has never been shy about calling out the manager:

But after so many years in charge of the club, it would be a shock to see Wenger leave the north Londoners before he decides it's time. Perhaps the only thing more shocking would be to see Mourinho—almost universally hated by the Arsenal faithful—rock up as his replacement.

It would make for a fantastic first press conference and some incredible meltdowns on social media, but as Wright said, it's not likely to happen.
