What Does the Future Hold for Edinson Cavani at PSG?

With the 9-0 win over Troyes on Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain clinched their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title and with it, began planning for next season, with the future of Edinson Cavani at the forefront of the decisions to be made.

With his form, as well as the amazing season enjoyed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic this term, it was expected that the Uruguayan would probably leave Paris this summer, with the Swede signing for another year—however, that changed on Sunday.

The four-goal hero poured some cold water on the title celebrations, giving the biggest hint so far that he will not remain at the club beyond the end of his contract this summer.

The Swede told beIN Sports (h/t ESPN FC) that, "for the moment," he will not be at PSG next season.

"I always had a good relationship with the fans," he said. "With the club, they always took care of me. "I have always had a great relationship with everybody, no question about it. But, for the moment, I am not in PSG next year.

"I have one-and-a-half months to stay here. I will enjoy while I'm still here. What happens next year, I don't know but for the moment I am not here I will not be here."

This move from Ibrahimovic puts a little more pressure on Cavani before the end of the season. The 29-year-old has until the last game against Nantes at the Parc des Princes to prove he is the No. 9 that PSG need to lead their attack.

On the surface, it may be odd to suggest there is any doubt regarding Cavani’s ability. Statistically, he is enjoying a good season. His two goals against Troyes took his tally to 14, but it was in the very same game that the former Napoli man showed just why he has had to endure time on the bench this campaign.

For both goals, the striker needed two bites at the cherry to find the back of the net against the team with the worst defensive record in the league. Even from the penalty spot Cavani couldn’t score at the first time of asking.

Chances were missed, and that is the way it has been far too often this season. There are chances he takes, like the finish against Chelsea, when you think he’ll definitely miss—but it’s the chances he should score that go begging—that’s what takes away his status as one of Europe’s best strikers.

His numbers always mean he will be linked with the biggest clubs, but there is a reason why they never make a move to sign him.

Speaking to the media back in January, via the Independent, PSG head coach Laurent Blanc said: “There is a problem with Cavani’s behaviour but my job is to think of the entire squad as a collective.

“We did hold a staff meeting and among the various issues we discussed were Cavani and his complaints. The desires of the individual can’t affect the rest of the team. I believe that he can score here, but I understand if he wants to consider other career opportunities.”

PSG may have been considering letting the Uruguayan leave this summer, but it may be too much to see both he and Ibrahimovic leave in the same season.

Cavani may get one last season to prove he is the No. 9 that the Parisians need, but that may only be because the real star of the show has decided to continue his career somewhere else. If the pressure wasn’t on El Matador already, it is about to get a lot worse.
