Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio: Winner, and Reaction from UR Fight 2016

Mike ChiariMar 20, 2016

Rey Mysterio defeated Kurt Angle Sunday as part of the UR Fight Internet pay-per-view in Phoenix in what was a battle between two of professional wrestling's top legends.

Houston rapper Riff Raff emerged to help Mysterio, and was standing tall with the champion after the two out of three pinfalls match, via MMA GIFS:

While the Olympic gold medalist and the Ultimate Underdog have engaged in many battles over the years, Angle revealed prior to the match that it had been a long time since they last locked horns:

The two future WWE Hall of Famers seemingly didn't miss a beat despite a decade apart, as they put on an entertaining bout for the fans in attendance and those watching on iPPV.

Hall of Fame announcer Jim Ross called the action, and he described the show as "the most unique PPV that I will (have) ever been a part of" on his blog in the days preceding the event.

In addition to the clash between Angle and Mysterio, the card featured Roy Jones Jr. in boxing action, Tank Abbott against Dan "The Beast" Severn in mixed martial arts and Chael Sonnen taking on Michael Bisping in a grappling match.

The 47-year-old Angle recently competed in his final match for TNA after 10 years with the company, and he is now technically a free agent. His wrestling future remains in question, but he showed Sunday that he can still go with the best of them.

Mysterio is still a hot commodity at 41 years of age, as he is currently a key member of the Lucha Underground roster and had previously been working for the AAA promotion in Mexico as well.

Angle and Mysterio achieved much of their success in WWE as multi-time world champions who competed in big WrestleMania matches on several occasions.

The American Hero held essentially every title the company had to offer, including the WWE Championship four times, the World Heavyweight Championship once and the WCW Championship once. Mysterio was a one-time WWE champion and two-time World Heavyweight titleholder.

They were also both part of the revered "SmackDown Six" in 2002, which also featured Eddie Guerrero, Chavo Guerrero, Chris Benoit and Edge. The group had myriad fantastic matches for WWE's blue brand during a time that is regarded by many as the best in SmackDown history.

Angle and Mysterio looked to recapture that magic Sunday, and while they may have inevitably lost a few steps over the years, they showed why they are two of the best to ever lace up the boots.

The focus now shifts toward what comes next for both combatants. Angle is in flux with his TNA contract now up, while Mysterio is part of a company that tapes far in advance, which gives him plenty of time to potentially take other bookings.

Questions always arise regarding potential WWE returns for former top talents, and while it is difficult to say if that is in the cards for either man, they both showed Sunday that they are still capable of working at the highest level.
