Thurmond Considering Retirement
Tuesday, March 15
The Philadelphia Daily News' Les Bowen, citing multiple sources throughout the league, reported on March 11 that Thurmond may be calling it quits. The former Philadelphia Eagle responded, "Who started that rumor?" in a text to Bowen but didn't offer further clarification.
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, little has changed regarding his future.
Thurmond has spent six years in the NFL. The first four of those years came with the Seattle Seahawks, and he went on to have one-year stints with the Eagles and New York Giants.
Injuries have been a dominant theme of his pro career. He has missed a total of 44 regular-season games for a variety of issues. In an October interview with Bowen, Thurmond discussed how the physical cost of playing in the NFL had him contemplating his future:
"It's part of the game. If I suffer (another) serious injury, like the ones I've had to my leg or my knee, I would probably contemplate my future as far as the NFL's concerned, but that's one of the things where I don't think about it, and I just go out there and play every game like it's my last, because you just never know in this business.
"
If Thurmond ultimately does retire, it won't have been for a lack of options ahead of the 2016 season. Florio noted in his report the former Oregon Duck has received offers worth roughly $4 million.
However, it appears teams will have to look elsewhere if they're still hoping to bolster their secondaries this offseason.
