Serena Williams’ 7-6 (2), 6-0 victory over Yulia Putintseva was the nightcap of a jam-packed day.
Williams made 29 unforced errors in the first set and looked rusty, having been away from the court for six weeks. This is the world No. 1's first tournament since she lost in the Australian Open final against Angelique Kerber on Jan. 30.
Williams had to force a tiebreak in the first set before finally settling into her rhythm, cruising to a dominant victory in the second set.
She said once she found herself, she was able to maintain the momentum, per the Associated Press (h/t ABC News):
"I was just trying to find my rhythm out there, trying my best to not get off to a slow start. Then I got broken really early and I couldn't manage to break back. I was just trying to fight out there and do what I could. … My intensity was higher and I started making my shots. I was going for it. I just kept missing it either in the net or missing it out. Really, really close. I started making them, and then I started getting more confidence to continue to go for it, and that kind of helped me out.
"
Men’s world No. 1 Novak Djokovic didn’t have it as easy.
The defending Indian Wells champion survived Bjorn Fratangelo, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, to advance.
Here is a look at one of his uncharacteristic mistakes during the third set, via TennisTV:
Rafael Nadal was also in action in doubles. He and partner Fernando Verdasco fell to Bob and Mike Bryan, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8, in one of the most highly anticipated matches of the day.
Even Mike Bryan admitted the early-round draw at the 10-day event had extra appeal.
"Yeah, we usually don't look at draws, but a couple of guys came up to us and said, 'Did you guys see the first round,'" he said, per Kamakshi Tandon of Tennis.com.
Nadal is now 0-7 against the American Bryan brothers, but he had arguably the play of the day on a pair resilient backhands in the second set, as the ATP World Tour showed:
It was one of the many great plays of Sunday’s blockbuster match that match lived up to the hype.
The Spaniards claimed the first set before the Bryans tied the match at 1-1 to set up an epic finale in the third. The Bryans needed a tiebreak to remain alive and advance.
Action continues throughout the week as the tournament moves to the third round Monday.
