Colts Reportedly Interested in McCown

Thursday, March 10

According to Field Yates of ESPN, McCown visited the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday.

McCown played for the New Orleans Saints last season and only threw 39 passes all year behind Drew Brees. However, he was impressive in a narrow 27-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 27 and finished 31-of-38 passing for 310 yards.

McCown has primarily been a backup throughout his career with the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Saints. Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk noted he has started only one time in the past four years, although that was the solid performance against the Panthers in 2015.

Here is a look at his career totals:

2004Cleveland Browns548-of-9860847
2007Tampa Bay Buccaneers594-of-1391,00953
2008Tampa Bay Buccaneers20-of-1000

The Colts make sense as a potential landing spot since quarterback Andrew Luck only played seven games last season because of injuries. As a result, Matt Hasselbeck was forced to play eight games for Indianapolis at the age of 40.

Hasselbeck announced his retirement this offseason, per Allie Stoneberg of ESPN. What’s more, the Colts released quarterback Josh Freeman on Monday, per Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star, which means they are in need of some depth behind Luck as the starter returns from injury.

Holder also said Charlie Whitehurst is a free agent this offseason, which only underscores Indianapolis' lack of quarterback depth, and added “the list of free-agent quarterbacks who aren’t starting candidates is rather underwhelming.”

In an ideal world for Indianapolis, Luck will remain healthy in 2016 and continue his ascension into superstardom. After all, he played all 16 games in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and is still only 26 years old.

The Colts can’t simply rely on that happening, though, after they finished 8-8 last season without a consistently healthy Luck. In addition to McCown, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported backup option Scott Tolzien was also scheduled to meet with Indianapolis on Thursday and Friday.

If the Colts do choose McCown, they will at least be adding someone with veteran experience who impressed against the NFC champion Carolina Panthers just last year.
