Smith, 34, accumulated 121 tackles, three sacks and an interception in 16 games with the Baltimore Ravens in 2015. It was the sixth time in the last seven seasons Smith has registered 97 or more tackles.
He started all 48 games for the Ravens over the past three seasons and also led them in tackles in two of those seasons.
But the Ravens released Smith this offseason in conjunction with declining the 2016 option for fellow starter and defensive end Chris Canty, freeing up about $4.5 million of much-needed cap space in the process.
One reason the Ravens were willing to release him—and one potential concern for the Buccaneers—is that Smith has become more of a liability in the passing game and isn't on the field on third downs or obvious passing situations.
Nonetheless, Smith remains a tackling machine and a smart, veteran option at the linebacker position. While it's arguable he's no longer a three-down linebacker, he continues to be a very solid option on first and second downs and will be an upgrade for Tampa Bay at the linebacker position.
