Leodis McKelvin Signs 2-Year Deal with Eagles

Joseph ZuckerMar 8, 2016

Cornerback Leodis McKelvin agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, who added the deal is for two years and worth over $6 million.

McKelvin has spent the last eight seasons with the Buffalo Bills, who selected him 11th overall in the 2008 draft. In 98 games for the team, the 30-year-old intercepted 13 passes.

Buffalo cut him last week, which resulted in a $3.9 million salary-cap savings, per Over the Cap. McKelvin sent an appreciative post on Instagram following his release:

When healthy and at his peak, McKelvin was an above-average cornerback. The problem, especially in recent years, is his inability to stay on the field. He missed six games in 2014 and seven games in 2015. An ankle injury ended his season two years ago, and during the recovery process, he aggravated the problem again, which forced him out for the start of last season.

In addition to the ankle injury, McKelvin's performance on the field has dipped a bit. Pro Football Focus graded him the 83rd-best corner in the league in 2015.

As a result, expecting him to be a lockdown No. 1 corner would be unrealistic in 2016. He could, however, operate effectively in the slot or as a nickelback.
