Von Miller Comments on Johnny Manziel's Future in NFL

Mike ChiariMar 8, 2016

While quarterback Johnny Manziel has become a pariah of sorts in NFL circles, there is at least one prominent player who has his back, in the form of the reigning Super Bowl MVP.

In an interview with Clay Skipper of GQ, Denver Broncos superstar pass-rusher Von Miller expressed confidence in Johnny Football and brought up the possibility of the former Heisman Trophy winner ending up in the Mile High City:

"

Not only will he be back in the league—of course I'm biased—I still feel like he has a lot of game left in him. I feel like the world hasn't even seen him get down yet. Some of the stuff he was doing in college, he gonna do the exact same thing in the National Football League. I feel like—you know you never want to blame a team—I don't think he had enough support around him. Who knows? You might see Johnny Manziel in Denver.

Both Manziel and Miller are Texas A&M alumni, and while they never played together with the Aggies, they have forged a friendship, as evidenced by this Instagram photo of them attending UFC 196 together on March 5:

Manziel is expected to be released by the Cleveland Browns when the new league year begins Wednesday due largely to a number of off-field incidents, including domestic violence allegations levied by his ex-girlfriend.

The Broncos have a complicated quarterback situation currently following the official announcement of Peyton Manning's retirement Monday. Brock Osweiler is the expected heir apparent, but he could potentially sign elsewhere as an unrestricted free agent.

While the defending Super Bowl champs rolling the dice on a player as divisive as Manziel may seem like a long shot, Miller is of the belief that the troubled signal-caller is getting on the right path:

"

He wants to be great. And whenever you got that hunger for success and greatness, you're going to find a way. Sometimes you get caught in places where you can only see a foot in front of you, let alone looking 30 weeks, 40 weeks, a year down the road. I think he's just staying on a consistent path now of keeping his head down, working and paying attention to what’s in front of him.

"

Miller also made it clear that he fully intends to stand by his friend and help him reach the level that so many expected him to achieve when he made the leap from Texas A&M to the NFL:

"

I talked to him today. We're going to start working out. I'm not too big to work out with my buddies. He was never too big to work out with me. I love him to death. And he knows the type of support he has. It's ultimately all up to the individual, but it also takes a support system and the type of support Johnny has is second to none. I'm first on that list. Whatever he needs, I'm going to get it done for him.

"

Now that Miller has developed into one of the NFL's truly elite players, his presence in Manziel's corner carries plenty of weight.

While it is still incumbent upon Johnny Football to turn his life around and show commitment to being a great NFL player, Miller's endorsement doesn't figure to hurt.

A team will undoubtedly be taking a gamble if it does sign Manziel due to the media scrutiny that will come along with it, but he is a supremely talented player, and one of his most prominent peers believes things will ultimately come together for him.
