The Most Impressive Number 95 a Project 99 Entry

Kevin McGradySep 27, 2009

The best player to ever wear number 95. There are many excellent athletes to wear the number 95. Recently Ray McDonald for the Florida Gators 2006 championship team is one that comes to mind. While all of these players deserve credit for their accomplishments, I believe another Florida Native is the best athlete to wear number 95.

Gregory Lenard LLoyd born May 26, 1965 in Miami. Attended Fort Valley State University where he received various awards for his aggressive defensive play. He was the Defensive Most Valuable Player three years running and an All American selection his senior year. This got the attention of one Chuck Knoll. This legendary Steeler coach drafted LLoyd in 1987. LLoyd was plagued by injury and did not start until the 1989 season. He played Outside Linebacker for the Steelers with such zeal that he was looked upon as the leader of the ferocious Steeler defense. He was so aggressive in his style and so unrelenting in his performance that Joe Namath said he played dirty in 1991. LLoyd was a multiple year Pro Bowl selection and a favorite by fans. He was known for wearing various T-Shirts that said "I Wasn't Hired For My Disposition". This endeared him to fans in Pittsburgh where these T-Shirts as well as 95 Jerseys were a best seller. Fans loved his nasty persona and no player was feared more in the NFL. Lloyd never got along with the media and was known for his foul mouth and nasty attitude toward the media. This only gained him notoriety and fame as a Steeler. Lloyd was named as a member of the 75th Anniversary Team.

During his time with Pittsburgh from 1988 to 1997 Lloyd was truly remarkable in his accomplishments. He was a part of the Carolina Team for the 1998 season.

Lloyd was a Pro Bowler in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995

Lloyd was first team All-Pro 1993, 1994, 1995

Lloyd is still alive and well and is a Tae Kwon Do instructor. He is still resistant to media attention and prefers to be left in private.

My thanks to Adrian Staehle for being included in Project 99!
