NCAA Football Top 25 Week 4: Alabama New No. 1; Four Top 10 Teams Fall

Tyler StimsonSep 26, 2009

What a wild week four! We had four teams in the top 10 fall. Here is my new Top 25:

(These are my rankings, which are used in the ESPNU poll. They are not predictions of what the top 25 rankings will actually be.)

1. Alabama

Rolled over Arkansas 35-7. This year's team is picking up right where last year's left off. They have been the most impressive team so far this year, regardless what the preseason polls said would be the best teams.

Their victory over Virginia Tech continues to look more impressive as the season continues.

2. Florida

Won 41-7 over Kentucky, but Tim Tebow left the game to visit the hospital because of concussion-like symptoms. He should be all right though.

I gave Alabama the nod because of their impressive victory over Virginia Tech and to reward Alabama for scheduling elite competition early in the season.

3. Texas

Won 64-7 over UTEP. Colt McCoy threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns against cupcake competition.

Now Texas gets a week off to prepare for Colorado, before the anticipated showdown against Oklahoma.

4. Boise State

Jumps four spots after three teams ahead of them fall. Beat Bowling Green 49-14.

Does this team have a shot at the title game? That is the question we have to start asking, especially after how good Oregon looked this Saturday. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

5. LSU

Had a phenomenal goal line stand to avoid the upset, beating Mississippi State 30-26.

6. Virginia Tech

Looked dominant, beating the upstart Miami Hurricanes 31-7. In my mind, they are the best one-loss team in the nation.

7. Houston

Came and knocked down another Big-12 opponent, beating Texas Tech at home 29-28 in the last minute of the game. Houston has the look of a BCS buster.

8. TCU

Beat Clemson on the road 14-10. They just might have the best defense in the country this year.

9. Iowa

I know this may seem shockingly high, but they are undefeated and just beat No. 5 Penn State in Happy Valley, 21-10.

10. Oklahoma

Took the week off. They face Miami next week. It will be interesting to see if Sam Bradford is healthy enough to play, and how Oklahoma responds against their first real test since the BYU loss.

11. USC

Easily beat Washington State.

12. Ohio State

Looked impressive posting a second consecutive shut-out.

13. Oregon

Had one of the most shocking and impressive wins of the weekend, defeating Cal 42-3. The Pac-10 better take notice. That Boise State loss at the beginning of the season seems like a distant memory, and is by no means a bad loss.

14. South Florida

Their defense looked spectacular against Florida State leading them to 17-7 victory. They are still unscathed at 4-0.

15. Cincinnati

Narrowly avoided the upset by Fresno State, this team looks like the class of the Big East and has a chance to play in the title game.

16. Michigan

Narrowly avoided the upset by Indiana. Tate Forcier does it again!

17. Nebraska

Blanked Louisiana-Lafayette, 55-0.

18. Oklahoma State

Took the week off. Visits Texas A&M next Saturday. *Correction* Oklahoma State beat Grambling State 56-6 on Saturday.

19. Kansas

Still unbeaten after narrowly avoiding getting upset by Southern Miss.

20. Missouri

Still unbeaten after defeating Nevada 31-21.

21. Georgia

Narrowly beat Arizona State 20-17 at home.

22. Penn State

Had an awful showing in their first real game of the season, losing to Iowa 21-10.

23. California

Laid a massive egg in Eugene, looking like they didn't even deserve to be on the same field as the mighty Ducks of Oregon.

24. Brigham Young

Looked back to their normal selves, defeating Colorado State 42-23. They have to wonder if they just happened to catch Florida State on the wrong week.

25. Utah

Beat Louisville 30-14 in Salt Lake City. That loss in Eugene doesn't look bad at all now.

Newcomers: Utah, South Florida, Iowa, Georgia, Oregon

Dropped out: Mississippi, Miami, North Carolina, Florida State

Knocking on the Door: South Carolina* (I accidently left them out originally), Georgia Tech, Miami, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Auburn, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame

Well, there you have it.

Please post any questions/concerns/comments below.
