Who knew a Europa League match between Manchester United and FC Midtjylland could be quite so spicy?

The Danish side visited Old Trafford on Thursday knowing they could inflict (yet another) serious blow to Louis van Gaal's tenure with anything better than a defeat.

Their captain, Tim Sparv, made their tactics clear in the lead-up to the game...

Meanwhile United, who trailed 2-1 after the first leg, were without several first-team players in a lineup that few fans would have expected to take the field in European competition this season...

And their sense of injustice got no better as kick-off grew nearer, with Anthony Martial picking up an injury in the warm-up...

The pressure got even more intense as Pione Sisto fired Midtjylland in front inside half an hour...

Though United rallied and equalised through an own goal shortly afterwards...

And the emotional rollercoaster of supporting Van Gaal's side kept on going when Ander Herrera won a penalty only for Juan Mata to see his spot-kick saved...

It's been quite the fall from grace for United...

Fans grew more and more impatient as Herrera and Morgan Schneiderlin went agonisingly close in the second half...

But they finally got their goal when Rashford (who else?) tapped home after an hour...

Rashford's stunning evening got even better with 10 minutes to play when he fired home his second to put United 3-2 in front in the tie...

Herrera made it safe with a late penalty, but fans were wondering why Rashford wasn't given the chance from 12 yards...

And Memphis capped a fine individual performance with a late goal to put the icing on the cake for Manchester United, but the night was about one man...

Next up for Louis van Gaal? Arsenal.
