Judgement Day: Top 25 Preview

Ron JohnsonOct 3, 2007

So after the all the upsets last weekend, people are thinking that it's over.

But the problem is that if you've never seen Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops ticked off, you should know that they are already thinking about the next game. For both of them, it's critical to win it.

Here's the rundown of this weekend's crucial matchups.

College Football Playoff National Championship: Head Coaches News Conference

#1 LSU vs. #9 Florida

On paper, this looks like a win for the Tigers. On paper, this looks like the end of the Gators' quest for a 2nd consecutive national championship appearance. On paper, this is the game that makes or breaks the SEC's chances of a BCS Championship berth.

If you haven't figured it out by now, on paper means nothing in the college ranks. Last week, I called South Florida upsetting West Virginia. This week, I'm calling the ultimate upset special.

Tim Tebow will bounce back from his dismal performance against Auburn—Florida gets back into the top three with an upset in Baton Rouge.

Game Set Match. Gators win this one, but it will be a nailbiter.

Final Score: Gators 37, Tigers 27

#2 USC vs. Stanford

The Trojans escaped Seattle with a win over the Huskies, but Stanford has had some good times and some bad times. This will qualify as one of those bad times.

John David Booty will have to step up to improve his standing with the Heisman committee. But to get the #1 spot back, SC will have to blow out Stanford and finish off the west coast swing with wins over Oregon, Oregon State, and California. Beat those three and you will win the Pac 10, as well as the right to play for the BCS Championship.

Final Score: Trojans 54, Cardinals 10

Icon#4 Ohio State vs. #23 Purdue

This is the first official test for the Buckeyes. This is also the first official test for the Boilermakers.

Both teams come into this one winning their conference opener. Both teams come in ranked and fighting for the Big Ten. Both teams come in undefeated. Something's got to give.

The Boilermakers will have to be their usual selves, only better if they want to beat a highly motivated Buckeyes team. The reason Ohio State wins this game isn't because of their offense—but because of their defense.

James Laurinaitis will be extra tough, and don't be surprised to see some huge defense and special teams plays in this one. This game will go down to the wire—but in the end, the Buckeyes move up and shockingly enough, so do the Boilermakers.

Final Score: Buckeyes 30, Boilermakers 24

#5 Wisconsin vs. Illinois

The Badgers squeaked out another win out last weekend against Michigan State. That won't be the case this weekend because Illinois has been on a hot streak since losing their season opener.

After beating Penn State, the Illini can officially add the "Fighting" back to their name. PJ Hill will officially get a gut check against this stingy Illini defense.

Remember how I said that the luck of the Badgers would run out? Well this just might be the game that it happens. So with that being said...

Final Score: Illini 30, Badgers 27

#6 South Florida vs. Florida Atlantic

The Bulls gored the Mountaineers of West Virginia last Friday night. Now that they are where they want to be (which is in the Top 10) the sky's the limit for the Green T-Bone Steaks of South Florida.

The Owls are considered to be a pushover by many teams. However South Florida is doing what many are starting to do: take every game seriously.

Not much to say about this one except that the Bulls will improve their chances of winning the Big East...but beware of UConn. They're undefeated too, just not ranked.

Final Score
: Bulls 34, Owls 7

Icon#7 Boston College vs. Bowling Green

The Eagles have been flying under the radar all season, and they have quietly given the ACC some much needed respect in the process. The only ACC team that is ranked higher than 15th, Boston College should have no problems against Bowling Green.

But then again, the Falcons have played spoiler in the past—so I guess anything's possible. But not this weekend.

Expect the Eagles to ground the orange birds and put this game away by the third quarter.

Final Score: Eagles 27, Falcons 17

#8 Kentucky vs. #11 South Carolina

Arguably the most shocking team in the SEC has to be the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats. The Cats are sitting pretty heading into their three biggest games of the season (South Carolina, LSU, & Florida).

If the Gators don't get the job done in Baton Rouge, expect Andre Woodson to capitalize on a good situation. The Wildcats have prevented their fans from thinking about Midnight Madness and the basketball team (with all due respect).

As for the Gamecocks, they need a win before they have a shootout with Florida. But the truth about this game is the Cats don't look to be stopped anytime soon.

It sure isn't going to start now.

Final Score: Wildcats 30, Gamecocks 17

Icon#10 Oklahoma vs. #19 Texas

The Sooners are coming off a shocker in Folsom Prison. The Longhorns are coming off a heartbreaker against the Midwest Purple Birds. Both teams lost last week, which most people think is the buzzkill of this year's Red River Shootout.

The problem is that every team in the top 10 is going to have at least one loss on their record at season's end. So it's Sam Bradford vs. Colt McCoy in the ultimate Wild West Showdown.

When the smoke clears, the Sooners will bounce back and get that much needed conference win. As for the Longhorns—ever been to the Meineke Car Care Bowl?

Final Score
: Sooners 54, Longhorns 24

The Rest of the Pack

#12 Georgia vs. Tennessee

Final Score: Volunteers 27, Bulldogs 10

#13 West Virginia vs. Syracuse

Final Score: Mountaineers 24, Orangemen 20

#15 Virginia Tech vs. #22 Clemson

Final Score: Hokies 26, Tigers 13

#16 Hawaii vs. Utah State

Final Score: Warriors 63, Aggies 3

#17 Missouri vs. #25 Nebraska

Final Score: Tigers 34, Cornhuskers 17

#18 Arizona State vs. Washington State

Final Score: Sun Devils 20, Cougars 7

#20 Cincinnati vs. #21 Rutgers

Final Score: Scarlet Knights 27, Bearcats 21

#24 Kansas State vs. Kansas

Final Score: Wildcats 44, Jayhawks 10

Later Knuckleheads. See ya on Saturday.
