Questions the Cal Bears Need to Address Before USC

Steven ResnickSep 26, 2009

With California being absolutely dominated by the Oregon Ducks. There are questions that need to be addressed before the game against the USC Trojans! Some of them more serious then others.

Is there going to be a quarterback controversy?
My answer is yes especially if Riley starts out against USC like he did against the Ducks. Riley has put up some nice numbers against bad defenses, but when he finally got to play against a team with a solid defense he was terrible.

By half time there were be calls to put in Brock Mansion to take over for Riley.

When will the Bears get a field goal kicker that can make a field goal under 45 yards?
The Bears have a few kickers on the team, but it seems like the Bears cannot find a true kicker that can give them a consistent kicking game. Yes, there was a 47 yard field goal made today, but from 43 yards it was missed. Then again the three points really wouldn't have mattered.

Does Bob Gregory have a defense for when the Bears get put into a close game or are trailing?
The answer is no. Against the Ducks the Bears had absolutely no pass rush and this was a team that replaced four of their starters and most of them were playing different positions then they had before.

What happened to the secondary?
Syd'Quan Thompson is still the best corner in the conference and quite frankly college football, but other then that what happened to the secondary? They make careless mistakes and they aren't playing disciplined football.

When a team turns the ball over and the Bears are in scoring position why was't Jahvid Best used?
I guess this still bothers me the Bears had a chance to take some momentum from the Ducks after recovering the fumble on the kickoff. They could have scored a touchdown, but instead the Bears elected to throw on three straight plays.

It just doesn't make sense when you have the best running back in the conference and in college football to ignore him in that situation especially when its the first offensive possession for the Bears.

What happened to the two headed backfield?
The Bears earlier in the year utilized both Shane Vereen and Jahvid Best. Now it seems like Vereen has disappeared. While Riley was struggling to find open receivers Vereen or Best could have been a better choice on the screen plays or short throws to Vereen or Best out of the backfield would have helped.
