Recap

Ivanovic spent less than an hour on the court on Tuesday, dominating Gavrilova on her way to the second round.

Gavrilova endured a nightmare afternoon, hitting no less than five double-faults and giving up a total of nine break chances, per Protennislive.com. She did manage to break once but otherwise looked helpless in the return game.

Ivanovic has been in solid form of late and made the semi-finals in St. Petersburg, but her performance against Gavrilova ranks among her very best of the last few months. Tenis Portugal's Gaspar Lanca was impressed:

Ivanovic's serve game in particular looked on point against Gavrilova, while she also moved well across the court. She'll have to be at her best to continue her fine run in Round 2, as she will play defending champion and top seed Simona Halep.

Per the Associated Press (via Sports Illustrated), Ivanovic seems up for the challenge: “You want to play against the best, and next match is going to be a tough one for me. Simona is a very tough, consistent player. She strikes the ball well. She moves well. So it's going to be a good challenge.”

Svitolina also played solidly on Tuesday. Coaching consultant Justine Henin watched as the Ukrainian struggled with her serve early, running into a number of double-faults, before turning it on in the second set.

Cepelova didn't fare much better but was able to do some damage in the return game in the first set, breaking twice to win two of her three games. She wasn't nearly as strong in the second set, and per TennisTV, she required the help of her trainer:

Jankovic dropped the first set against Bencic but bounced back to win, knocking out the fifth seed in the process. The two served up the match of the day, battling it out in lengthy key games on several occasions.

Jankovic's experience made the difference, however, as the 18-year-old Bencic couldn't keep her composure when she needed to.

Sara Errani held off Chinese qualifier Saisai Zheng, winning 7-5, 6-3, thanks in large part to a stunning comeback in the first set. Down 5-1, the Italian took six straight games to grab the lead, and she carried that momentum into the second set to dispatch her opponent in a match that saw no less than 10 breaks through just two sets.

In the final match of the day, Yaroslava Shvedova booked an upset win over Roberta Vinci, beating the seventh-seeded Italian 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Vinci never looked comfortable and Shvedova took full advantage, converting her only two break chances in the final set to grab a ticket to the next round.
