Coldplay Super Bowl Halftime Show 2016 Prop Odds and Predictions

Tim DanielsFeb 7, 2016

As the Super Bowl turns 50 on Sunday night it's clearly become far more than simply a football game. Of course, the Denver Broncos taking on the Carolina Panthers for the NFL title is the main attraction, but the halftime show and the commercials are all now a major part of the television spectacle.

Coldplay is the main act for the halftime show, but they're going to get some help from their friends. Emanuella Grinberg of CNN notes Bruno Mars and Beyonce are also slated to take part in the star-studded musical extravaganza.

And if it's happening during the Super Bowl, there's probably a prop bet for it. Let's check out the halftime show options on the board, courtesy of Odds Shark:

Guessing which song will get played first is a tricky task because every band's approach to the halftime show is a little different. Some like to come out with a bang while others opt to slowly build toward a crescendo at the end of the performance.

With that in mind, "Viva la Vida" seems to present the best value on the board.

It's a song that got plenty of run when it got released just before the summer of 2008. So, while most people are probably aware of Coldplay, starting with that former hit will likely provide that remaining portion of the audience with an "OK, I've heard this band before" moment.

The fact there are seven options to pick from and none of them are more than 10-1 odds illustrates the wide-open nature of the prop, though.

The Beyonce footwear prop is one of the most interesting on the entire board for Sunday. That's mostly because of its unique nature, but it's also due to the fact that she has a million times more fashion sense that most people who will be guessing the result.

Gold feels like the best combination of a realistic choice and value. The NFL has heavily incorporated the color into its Super Bowl 50th anniversary branding and that will probably continue with the halftime set itself, so gold shoes would fit right in.

Of course, that may be too obvious, so perhaps Beyonce will go completely off the board to bring her own flair to the show. That would make "any other color' a solid second choice.

And then there's left shark. The oddsmakers clearly believe a return to action for last year's viral sensation is unlikely based on the odds with just a handful of hours until kickoff. It's hard to completely rule out an appearance, though.

Coldplay lead vocalist Chris Martin liked the side act, stating: "I've seen the left shark moment so many times. I thought he was wonderful, or she, whoever's in it," according to the NFL Network. So it doesn't sound like something he would stop from happening.

The costume is in the area, too. Darren Rovell of ESPN provided a picture earlier in the week:

Although it's a long shot, as the odds suggest, it wouldn't be a total surprise if left shark showed up. There are certainly worse options on the board.

Ultimately, it should be quite a show. Coldplay is a popular headliner, while Beyonce and Bruno Mars ensure there will be no shortage of stardom on the halftime stage. There will likely be a couple surprises along the way, as well.

It's Super Bowl 50, after all. Anything is possible. Even an encore performance from left shark.
