Nigel Warrior to Tennessee: Volunteers Land 4-Star Safety Prospect

Alec NathanFeb 3, 2016

Nigel Warrior has kept schools guessing for months now, but he squashed the speculation Wednesday and officially committed to the Tennessee Volunteers.

Matt Slovin of the Tennessean relayed Warrior's decision after the safety made his announcement at a press conference.

According to 247Sports’ composite rankings, the 4-star recruit out of Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, Georgia, is the fourth-ranked safety in his class, the seventh-best prospect in Georgia and the 58th-ranked player overall.

Tennessee has been the most viable destination for the coveted defensive back all along, despite heavy interest from SEC competitors like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and LSU.

Warrior is a Vols legacy, and his father, Dale Carter, broke out as an All-American during his time in Knoxville.

"I'm going to continue my father's legacy at the University of Tennessee," Warrior said, per Josh Ward of Sports Radio WNML.

Now, Warrior will be tasked with stepping out of his father’s shadow and forming his own identity as a stalwart in the Vols defensive backfield.

“He’s a grinder,” Carter told Scout.com’s Danny Parker, “I tell him about the things and what he to expect before even when he gets to school—when he gets to Tennessee. I just tell him the things that you’ve got to expect. He’s not going to live in my shoes. He’s got his own path.”

In three seasons with the varsity team at Peachtree Ridge High School, Warrior amassed 119 solo tackles, nine interceptions and four fumble recoveries, according to MaxPreps. Warrior also blocked two punts during his breakout junior campaign.

The prominent prospect should also be presented with a golden opportunity to break out right away. As Bleacher Report’s Sanjay Kirpalani noted, both of Tennessee’s starting safeties were seniors who are now out of eligibility.

As a result, the door is wide open for Warrior to make an impact upon arrival.
