Copa Del Rey 2016: Wednesday's Quarter-Final, Leg 2 Results and Reaction

James DudkoJan 27, 2016

Atletico Madrid were shockingly bounced out of the Copa del Rey after losing at home to Celta Vigo on Wednesday, a night when holders Barcelona progressed to the semi-final stage after seeing off last year's beaten finalists, Athletic Bilbao.

Atleti equalised after going behind early, but it was two second-half goals from the visitors that dealt the fatal blow to manager Diego Simeone's team. Meanwhile, Barca also fell behind in the first half, conceding after just 12 minutes, but were able to rely on their typical firepower to see them through.

Here are the final scores and results from Wednesday's second-leg games:

Recap

Pablo Hernandez scored twice for Vigo on either side of a thunderous strike from John Guidetti to stun Madrid despite yet another goal from Atleti's Antoine Griezmann along with one from Angel Correa.

When Celta's third went in, ESPN's Dermot Corrigan was critical of unusually slack defending from the normally miserly Atletico defence:

Spanish publication AS was also unimpressed:

While Hernandez stole a march on his markers, the highlight of the night was provided by Guidetti's goal, a strike even an in-form defence would have done little to stop. The Swedish striker blasted the ball home from well over 30 yards.

The hammer-like hit cancelled out Antoine Griezmann's first-half equaliser for the home side. As he so often does, the former Real Sociedad star popped up as a true fox in the box to produce a typically smart finish.

OptaJose detailed how Griezmann's latest goal underlined just how reliant Madrid are on the prolific Frenchman:

Young Argentinian attacker Correa created late excitement when he tied the Vigo defence in knots before finishing with a touch of class.

Late pressure predictably came their way, but the visitors held on. Manager Eduardo Berizzo has taken his team to a first semi-final in 15 years, per OptaJose.

Madrid boss Diego Simeone felt his team gave their all despite not getting any reward, per the club's Twitter:

While he commended his players' efforts, Simeone rued key mistakes:

Barcelona made it past a familiar foe thanks to goals from Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique and Neymar after Inaki Williams had given Bilbao a shock early lead. But the away side squandered too many chances in the fist half.

Suarez struck a big blow with a sweetly taken equaliser shortly after half-time. He finished a flowing move involving Lionel Messi.

In the process, Suarez set a benchmark in Europe this season, according to Squawka Football:

A Gerard Pique header and a drilled shot from Neymar late on finished off Bilbao.

Manager Luis Enrique credited Bilbao's performance, but was also proud of the way his players didn't abandon their trademark brand of football, per the team's official site:

"

I don’t know why that happens. But since the draw we knew that Athletic would make our lives difficult. They ask a lot of you and in the first half they have stopped us playing our game.

It was a very passionate game, both sides can take pride in it and we were faithful to our style of play.

"

Barca’s reward is a sixth straight semi-final berth. The club has to be favoured to retain the trophy.

With a deceptively deep forward line featuring not only Guidetti, but also Fabian Orellana and Iago Aspas, Vigo also have an excellent chance to go all the way.
