Atsu joined Chelsea from Porto in 2013 and has spent the bulk of his Blues career out on loan. He spent the first half of the 2015-16 season with Bournemouth but was scarcely used by the Cherries.
The 24-year-old has barely started a league match since returning from a loan spell with Dutch side Vitesse two years ago. He had an unproductive spell with Everton and did even less with Bournemouth, which is why he was recalled at the start of the January transfer window.
He remains a special talent, as evidenced by the fact he was named Player of the Tournament at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
The BBC's John Bennett likes this move for the Ghana international:
Per Ed Malyon of the Daily Mirror, a slot just opened up in Malaga's starting XI:
Another loan move seemed inevitable once Atsu returned to Stamford Bridge, and the forward must grasp this opportunity with both hands. Per Chelsea Youth, he wasn't able to convince the people running the show for Everton and Bournemouth, and he absolutely has to now.
His future with the Blues already looks questionable at best, but if he's able to impress during the second half of the season, he might convince another club to take a gamble on his impressive talent.
Chelsea could use his raw pace and constant running out wide as well, but he'll have to show drastic improvements at Malaga to have any chance of cracking the Blues' first team in the near future. With two unproductive loan spells already in his rear-view mirror, this move may be his final chance.
