Tim DanielsJan 23, 2016

The two overarching themes from the first week of the 2016 Australian Open continued throughout Saturday's action. Multiple high seeds were knocked out of the women's draw while the men's bracket saw mostly expected results.

Two more top-10 seeds, Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova, were eliminated on the women's side during the second half of Round 3. Meanwhile, 15 of the 16 players still in contention for the men's title came into the tournament as a seeded player.

Let's check out all of the results from Saturday's singles play. That's followed by a review of the day's storylines before the focus shifts to the fourth round.

Day 6 Recap

One of the day's best matches took a scary turn when Ana Ivanovic and Madison Keys were halted after Nigel Sears, Ivanovic's coach and Andy Murray's father-in-law, collapsed at Rod Laver Arena.

Bryan Armen Graham of the Guardian showcased the frantic scene:

Thankfully, Andy's brother Jamie Murray would tell reporters that Sears was "conscious, talking and sitting up," according to BBC Sport.

The match eventually resumed and became one of the most competitive of the tournament so far as Ivanovic and Keys battled deep into the third set. In the end, the 20-year-old American rising star squeaked out the victory thanks to a 44-21 edge in winners.

Full credit to Ivanovic for handling a difficult situation with grace. Afterward, she thanked the fans for their support despite the loss:

Meanwhile, the bottom half of the draw became even more wide open with the exit of Muguruza. The No. 3 seed had her moments, but Barbora Strycova was the more consistent player with just 16 errors compared to 32 for the 2015 Wimbledon finalist.

The result leaves Angelique Kerber as the only top-10 seed left in the bottom half of the bracket, though Victoria Azarenka has been playing like a top-five player so far in 2016. But the door is wide open for a surprising semifinalist or two.

Matt Cronin of Tennis Reporters provided some commentary on the result:

Over on the men's side, top contenders Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka both moved on to the fourth round. Murray did need four sets to oust Joao Sousa, but that brief lapse doesn't change his status as one of the main threats at the season's first major.

John Isner and Milos Raonic are two players from outside the core group of favorites that have emerged as likely tough outs through three rounds.

Isner put together another serving masterpiece to beat Feliciano Lopez on Saturday. The lanky American smashed 44 aces with just a single double fault while also adding 79 winners to reach the Australian Open fourth round for just the second time.

The ATP World Tour passed along comments from the No. 10 seed after the triumph, and he was relieved to move through a tricky matchup.

"It's a big win," Isner said. "It's a very tough opponent, especially for me, the way he plays. He certainly has given me trouble in the past. Also, it’s been a little while since I've been in the round of 16 at this tournament. It feels great. I'm very relieved to get through, want to keep on going."

Raonic was equally impressive as he swept aside Viktor Troicki in straight sets. Along with his trademark power, he also showed off a lot of touch at the net, making 32 approaches and winning 25 of those points. Troicki came to net 12 times and won just four points.

Brad Gilbert of ESPN was impressed with the overall display:

Looking ahead to Day 7, the action should really begin to heat up as the level of competition rises considerably with just 16 players left in each draw. The top seeds, Serena Williams (vs. Margarita Gasparyan) and Novak Djokovic (vs. Gilles Simon), will both be in action.

Among the other headliners on Sunday, Maria Sharapova faces a serious test from Belinda Bencic, Roger Federer takes on David Goffin and fans could be in for a marathon encounter as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga battles Kei Nishikori.
