Copa Del Rey 2016: Results, Reaction from Wednesday's Quarter-Final, Leg 1 Games

Rob BlanchetteJan 20, 2016

Atletico Madrid failed to beat Celta Vigo on their travels in the Copa del Rey, drawing 0-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final encounter on Wednesday.

It was a frustrating night for La Liga's leaders. The hosts dominated for long spells, but Celta could not find the goal they deserved.

Barcelona appeared to be on their way to a mandatory two-goal win against Athletic Bilbao in the night's other cup match, but a late goal by the hosts made the score 2-1, setting up an interesting second leg.

Atleti struggled at Celta on Wednesday but live to fight another day after earning a goalless draw at the Estadio de Balaidos.

Manager Diego Simeone made several changes for Atletico following their 3-0 win at Las Palmas on Sunday. Former Celta midfielder Augusto Fernandez kept his place in midfield, featuring against his old club for the first time.

Celta made three changes to the side that overcame Levante in a 4-3 thriller on Sunday. New signing Claudio Beauvue made his first appearance since arriving from Lyon.

Football journalist Andy Brassell highlighted the strength of Simeone's options:

The hosts dominated the opening 20 minutes, testing Simeone's defence as they looked to take the lead. Iago Aspas was in fine fettle, as he led the Celta attack with cunning and verve.

However, the Atleti slowly attained a foothold in the game as the tie raced towards half-time.

Koke and Gabi became more influential as the Liga leaders penetrated Celta's final third, but clear-cut chances were impossible to fashion, leading to a goalless opening half.

Celta once again took control of proceedings in the opening moments of the second half, as Atleti slipped into their shell. Simeone attempted to swing the advantage back in his favour by bringing on Angel Correa for the disappointing Jackson Martinez on the hour mark.

Aspas remained the home side's most likely threat, but he lashed his shot over the bar when it was easier to hit the target.

However, it was the visitors who thought they had grabbed an advantage late in the day, as Correa missed from the close range. The forward fluffed his line from six yards, unable to control his header, and Simeone bemoaned the miss from his technical area.

John Guidetti almost snatched victory at the death for Celta, but his effort was cleared off the line by Gabi, who was alert to the danger in the closing moments.

A goalless draw was the correct result on the night, but Atleti were far from their best and could have departed Celta with a defeat.

Barca trotted to an early two-goal lead against Athletic Club in Wednesday's other Copa match, but without Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, the treble winners conceded a disappointing late goal.

Ivan Rakitic was in fine form in the opening half, feeding Munir El-Haddadi for the first goal as the player continued his excellent performances in the cup.

Neymar made it 2-0 after only 24 minutes, as the Blaugrana threatened to run away with the result, ending the hosts' interest in the competition before the return at the Camp Nou.

Barca took their advantage into the second half as they hunted for a third, but Bilbao rallied and pushed forward in an entertaining final 20 minutes—as highlighted by football writer Sid Lowe:

Highly rated Inaki Williams believed he had won a penalty with six minutes left on the clock after a rash tackle from Javier Mascherano, but the referee waved away the strong appeal.

Bilbao got the goal they deserved with a minute of normal time remaining. Dani Alves made a mess of his clearance, opening the door for striker Aritz Aduriz to slot home from 12 yards—giving Athletic Club a slim chance for the second leg.

Barca rode the Bilbao storm in the second half, but they survived with more luck than judgement, as their defence rattled and collapsed.

Coach Luis Enrique will be disappointed his men couldn't finish the hosts off in the first half, when they wrestled the advantage, but Athletic Club could have earned the draw if they had struck earlier.
