Twitter Reacts as Wayne Rooney Scores in Man United's 1-0 Win over Liverpool

Liverpool hosted Manchester United on Sunday in a fixture slightly less glamorous than its history deserves.

Louis van Gaal's Red Devils sat sixth going into the fixture, while Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool were three points and three places below them.

In a rather uneventful first half-hour, Marouane Fellaini and Lucas Leiva gave the game some 'spice' with an early tussle:

David De Gea denied Adam Lallana's header, but Jordan Henderson fired wide with the best chance of the first half to the anger of his boss (and the Reds supporters):

Despite both sides being involved in midweek 3-3 thrillers, the match had failed to live up to expectations as the two sides went into the break at 0-0:

The visitors were lacking creativity, but Anthony Martial posed a rare threat on the Liverpool goal:

Manchester United had De Gea to thank for staying on terms after an hour when the Spaniard made a smart double stop:

Van Gaal's decision to replace Ander Herrera with Memphis Depay after 70 minutes was baffling:

But the Belgian proved his doubters wrong after 79 minutes, with his header crashing back off the bar for Wayne Rooney to smash home to give United an unlikely lead:

As the seconds ticked away, Klopp turned to his (not so) secret weapon:

But not even he could inspire another late leveller, as Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat that sees them stay eight points outside the top four ahead of another midweek fixture in the FA Cup.

Van Gaal's United pick up three points which move them above West Ham into fifth, just two points outside the UEFA Champions League places ahead of next weekend's Premier League clash with Southampton.
