Manchester United Transfer News: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Saul Niguez Rumours

Rory MarsdenJan 13, 2016

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a summer move for AC Milan's 16-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The youngster turns 17 in February, and the Red Devils are reportedly preparing to make a €40 million (£30 million) bid for him at the end of the season, per Italian outlet Sport Mediaset (via ESPN.co.uk).

Despite his age, Italian Donnarumma has become Milan's No. 1 this season, starting in their last 11 Serie A games since late October, per WhoScored.com.

He has even drawn comparisons with his legendary namesake and compatriot, Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon, per ESPN FC's James Horncastle.

United currently have a superstar goalkeeper in the shape of David de Gea and, despite him being on the verge of a move to Real Madrid last summer, the 25-year-old is now contracted to the Old Trafford club until 2019.

While that does not rule out the possibility of him moving to the Bernabeu this summer, De Gea recently indicated he was "happy" in Manchester on the occasion of his 200th game for the club:

However, there would certainly be no harm in United bringing in such a talented young star as Donnarumma as a long-term replacement for the Spaniard—it seems inevitable that the former Atletico Madrid man will eventually end up back in the Spanish capital.

The current back-ups for De Gea at United are adequate, but the the likes of Sergio Romero and Sam Johnstone are unlikely to develop into bona fide Old Trafford No. 1s.

Donnarumma, though, has shown signs that he could become a world-class stopper worthy of a starting spot in the United team.

However, SportWitness wrote off the rumour as "crazy," and it does seem unlikely that United would be willing to shell out such big money on a largely unproven teenager, while Donnarumma is surely likely to want to stay at Milan for some time yet.

Elsewhere, Red Devils target Saul Niguez is happy at Atletico Madrid despite the interest from United, according to his father.

Jose Antonio Niguez insists that it would take a lot for his son to leave the Vicente Calderon at the moment, while also confirming his release clause at €45 million (£33.8 million), per Deportes Cope (via ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan):

"

I just heard about this through the newspapers and the TV, we knew nothing [of United's interest]. He has always said he wants to succeed at Atletico Madrid. Saul's release clause is €45 million. The kid is happy at the club, they are counting on him, the team is doing well, top of La Liga. A lot of things would have to happen for him to leave.

"

Having recently broken into the Atleti first team, 21-year-old Saul has the potential to become one of the world's best defensive midfielders, per Spanish football expert Guillem Balague:

The Spaniard mainly plays through the middle, but he can also operate out wide.

As a long-term prospect he could be a terrific addition at United—the likes of Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger both being in the latter stages of their careers—but at least for now, he is seemingly staying put in Madrid.
