Ivan Rakitic, Barcelona Agree on New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction
Barcelona and star midfielder Ivan Rakitic have agreed to a new contract that will keep the Croatia international at the Camp Nou until 2021.
Given his strong form and consistent contributions, Barcelona made the easy decision to extend his deal, inserting a €125 million buy-out clause, according to the club's official website.
The 28-year-old quickly became a key player for the Blaugrana after joining the club from Sevilla in 2014. He slotted into the starting XI almost seamlessly, providing the club with a little more physicality in the centre of the pitch.

Unlike regular midfield partners Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta, Rakitic never attended the iconic La Masia youth academy, and it shows in his play. Where his team-mates tend to be more cautious when defending, Rakitic has no qualms about throwing his body around, and a player like that proved to be just what the Catalans needed.

The arrivals of Arda Turan and Andre Gomes, players also known for their high work rate and physicality, have provided Rakitic with some competition in the middle of the park. However, with this contract extension, Barcelona are making it clear they value the Croat and see a long-term future for him at the Camp Nou.
Compared to some of the players around him, Rakitic's contributions often go unnoticed, but his performances should not be undervalued. Like Busquets, he plays a key role in shielding the defence, and because the two take on so many attackers, the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar have to worry less about dropping back and defending.
Rakitic has also proved himself in the transition game, where his ability to play diagonal passes sets up plenty of chances.
This new contract is undoubtedly a great move for both parties. The renewed commitment sends a clear message to Rakitic, while the club can rest easy, knowing it will be that much harder for prospective buyers to pry the star midfielder away from the Camp Nou.
