With the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the line, The Rock should be a surprise entrant in the 2016 Royal Rumble and walk away victorious.
The Royal Rumble marks the first step on the road to WrestleMania 32, and this year’s edition of WWE’s biggest show will be held inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, a facility with a capacity of 105,000.
Selling out the building would be an all-time attendance record for WWE, and one way to ensure every seat in the stadium remains occupied would be to give The Rock the world title and let him main event the show.
There will be a huge focus from WWE on selling WrestleMania 32 as the biggest wrestling event in history, and The Rock would be a vital asset in spreading the word during his many mainstream appearances.
The Rock is a legitimate Hollywood movie star now, and carrying around the WWE World Heavyweight Championship during media obligations would convince many casual fans to tune in when he'd eventually defend the title at WrestleMania 32.
With the title on the line in the Battle Royal, The Rock's chances of winning the belt are at their most believable right now. Anyone in the Royal Rumble could conceivably walk away with the championship, so booking The Rock to get a late draw into the match would be ideal.
There are concerns about his getting hurt again due to his movie schedule and previous injuries, but there is little risk for injury in a Royal Rumble match, especially when The Rock would only spend a few minutes in the ring by coming out as one of the last competitors.
There is recent precedent for The Rock's winning the title at the Royal Rumble and then dropping it at WrestleMania. In 2013, The Rock beat CM Punk for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble and then lost to John Cena at WrestleMania 29.
If The Rock were to win the title at the 2016 Royal Rumble, it would undoubtedly build serious mainstream hype for WrestleMania 32. With that said, he would also need to drop the title at AT&T Stadium in a safe match against a younger Superstar who would benefit from the rub.
After watching WWE programming for the last year, the answer for WWE would be Roman Reigns.
Reigns is the de facto face of WWE moving forward, and Vince McMahon and Company will look to get him over as a top draw at this year’s WrestleMania. Add in the fact that The Rock and Reigns are cousins, and this would be a marquee face-versus-face feud, similar to the Cena-Rock feud.
Many fans would react negatively to Reigns against The Rock at WrestleMania 32, but a story built on mutual respect leading into a serious competition between family members over the most important prize in the business is worthy of The Grandest Stage of Them All.
With proper booking, both Reigns and The Rock would generate positive reactions from the WWE Universe. Ultimately, the match should culminate with a Reigns win and a celebration featuring the proverbial passing of the torch.
With a precedent of success and the desire to make WrestleMania 32 the biggest spectacle in wrestling history, WWE should let The Rock walk out of the 2016 Royal Rumble with the championship.
