WWE Royal Rumble 2016: Feuds That Will Increase Excitement for Event

Aaron BowerJan 4, 2016

Although the marquee 30-man bout will headline WWE's upcoming Royal Rumble pay-per-view, there are still some ongoing feuds which will capture the attention of fans as the show approaches.

Some of those feuds will end up playing out in the Rumble match itself, but there will have to be plenty going on elsewhere to round out the three-hour card.

Whether it's for championships or not, here are some of the feuds that will get fans excited about the 2016 Royal Rumble.

Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens

Make no mistake about it, Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens is sure to be one of the hottest and most exciting matches on the entire card at this year's Royal Rumble.

Ambrose's shock victory late last year set things up for a pretty lengthy rivalry between the two, although expect Ambrose to keep hold of the Intercontinental Championship he took from Owens through at least the Royal Rumble.

There's been a real edge to Owens lately, though, as he's on a ruthless streak reminiscent of when he first arrived on the main roster midway through last year.

Ambrose is arguably one of the top two or three babyfaces in WWE at the moment, whilst Owens is probably the biggest heel on the entire roster.

Add in the fact that they're both hugely popular, and this is a bout that feels like it could be one of the standout matches of the Royal Rumblelet alone something for fans to get excited about.

Vince McMahon/The Authority vs. Roman Reigns

It goes without saying that Roman Reigns' rivalry with Sheamus is one of the more uninteresting ones in WWE at the moment, but thankfully the company has pulled a rabbit out of the hat and brought Vince McMahon back into its programming.

Vince and Roman seem to have some decent chemistry when they're firing promos at each other, and with the unpredictability of The Authority behind them, you can't quite be sure what's going to happen as the Royal Rumble approaches.

That will at least keep fans interested in the progress of Reigns as WWE world heavyweight champion, especially given that Reigns will likely come through his match against Sheamus on Raw this Monday.

That could open up the possibility of someone like Triple H stepping up and taking Reigns on, although things will surely become clearer in that regard after Raw this week.

With Vince, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon all watching closely and doing their best to take the title from Reigns, it makes for an exciting few weeks and something for fans to keep an eye on.

Brock Lesnar vs. The Rest of the Royal Rumble

It seems inevitable that Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman will return to TV in the coming weeks, and with little clarity over whom Lesnar could fight next, you'd be wise to assume he's destined to be in the Rumble match itself later this month.

That then sets up a storyline of its own, where Lesnar simply decimates random stars both in the ring and backstage to make his case as the most dominant Royal Rumble entrant in history.

Have Lesnar take down several lower-midcard guys, and build him up ahead of the biggest period of the year. R-Truth, Fandango and Bo Dallas all feel the force of Lesnar, as it becomes clear the majority of the roster is going to have to put in a collective effort to see off Brock in the Rumble match.

It's not really a traditional feud in a sense, but watching Lesnar try to charge his way through the 30-man field later this month would be well worth watching.

In fact, that possibility is one of the main reasons it'd be worth tuning into the show at all.
