Ryan Fitzpatrick Sets Jets' Single-Season Passing TD Record

Alec NathanJan 3, 2016

Ryan Fitzpatrick has experienced a revival during his first season as quarterback of the New York Jets, and he etched a place in team history Sunday afternoon by setting a single-season franchise record with his 30th touchdown toss of the 2015 campaign, according to Around the NFL on Twitter.

The defining moment came in the second quarter when Fitzpatrick found Brandon Marshall up the seam for a 17-yard score, as the team's official Twitter account documented:

Fitzpatrick entered Sunday's regular-season finale with 11 multitouchdown games to his name, including a four-touchdown outing against the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 29 and a three-touchdown effort in the Jets' Week 16 win over the New England Patriots.

Not only has Fitzpatrick's stock been trending in a positive direction since he first suited up for Gang Green, but his primary receiving weapons have functioned as beneficiaries of his personal renaissance.

Marshall and Eric Decker have been hauling in touchdown passes left and right throughout the 2015 season, and they joined Fitzpatrick in the record books last week. According to Fox Sports Live on Twitter, the duo set an NFL record by catching touchdowns in the same game for the eighth time this season in the overtime victory against New England.

"It's all about adjustments and he does that well," Marshall said of his quarterback, per NJ Advance Media's Darryl Slater. "He sees the game well, and he communicates with us well."

The 33-year-old has changed the dynamic of the Jets offense during his 11th NFL season, so it will be fascinating to see how contract negotiations between the career journeyman and the team's front office play out. According to Spotrac, Fitzpatrick is in the final year of his deal and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

"Bowles has yet to discuss his desire to bring back Fitzpatrick for next season with general manager Mike Maccagnan, but there’s little doubt the head coach will get what he wants," the New York Daily NewsManish Mehta wrote. "It makes perfect sense to re-sign Fitzpatrick."

While Fitzpatrick bounced around between the St. Louis Rams, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans before landing with the Jets, Chan Gailey's offense seems to suit the bearded signal-caller and the team's dynamic outside receivers beautifully.
