The Fastest and Slowest Swings on the PGA Tour

Ben AlberstadtJan 3, 2016

The fastest and slowest swingers of the golf club in 2015 were separated by nearly 25 miles per hour on average.

And since every mile per hour of clubhead speed adds a couple of yards, it isn't surprising that the fastest swingers outdrive the slowest ones by almost 40 yards on average.

We'll look at the four golfers with the fastest clubhead speeds on average in 2014-2015, as well as the four slowest. We'll also take a look at the golfers' average driving distance, smash factor (which essentially indicates how flush they strike the golf ball) and apex height.

Here are the PGA Tour's fastest and slowest swingers.

Fastest: Brooks Koepka

1 of 8

2014-2015 average clubhead speed: 122.77 mph

2014-2015 average drive distance (rank): 308.2 yards (8)

Smash factor (rank): 1.463 (168)

Apex height (rank)117'9'' (12)

Brooks Koepka's ability to hit it high, hard and far paid dividends in his second season on tour. The West Palm Beach, Florida, native won the Waste Management Phoenix Open and tallied eight top-10 finishes.

Slowest: Ben Crane

2 of 8

2014-2015 average clubhead speed: 104.59 mph

2014-2015 average drive distance: 271.0 (183)

Smash factor (rank): 1.497 (9)

Apex height (rank): 92'2'' (T142)

One of the shortest hitters on tour, Ben Crane is a solid striker of the ball with his limited clubhead speed. Not surprisingly, the 2014 FedEx St. Jude winner made just nine of 22 cuts: It's tough to compete with guys you're giving 15-plus yards to off the tee.

Fastest: Bubba Watson

3 of 8

2014-2015 average clubhead speed: 123.52 mph

2014-2015 average drive distance: 315.2 yards (2)

Smash factor (rank): 1.494 (T19)

Apex height (rank): 102'9'' (74)

Given his unique combination of clubhead speed, imagination and shot-making ability, no golfer on the PGA Tour has as many crayons to color with, as it were. Bubba Watson's ability to obliterate the golf course or bend it to his will, alternatively, helped him tally two wins and 10 top-10 finishes in 2015.

Slowest: Justin Leonard

4 of 8

2014-2015 average clubhead speed: 104.11 mph

2014-2015 average drive distance: 271.6 yards (182)

Smash factor (rank): 1.494 (T19)

Apex height (rank)84'1'' (171)

Justin Leonard will turn 44 during the 2015-2016 PGA Tour season. The 1997 Open Champion, never a long hitter, isn't getting any longer with age. Leonard made just eight of 22 cuts and didn't record a top-10 finish.

Fastest: Charlie Beljan

5 of 8

2014-2015 average clubhead speed: 124.02 mph

2014-2015 average drive distance: 309.6 (8)

Smash factor (rank):  1.468 (T155)

Apex height (rank): 106'2'' (50)

A tour winner in 2012, Arizona native Charlie Beljan crushes the ball but doesn't necessarily find the center of the clubface all the time. Beljan made just 11 of 27 cuts in 2015, down from 12 the previous season.

Slowest: Heath Slocum

6 of 8

2014-2015 average clubhead speed: 103.60 mph

2014-2015 average drive distance: 275.8 (177)

Smash factor (rank): 1.490 (T46)

Apex height (rank): 92'4'' (T140)

He doesn't hit it hard or high, but Heath Slocum has managed to record four wins on the PGA Tour, including the 2009 Barclays. Slocum made just six of 22 cuts in 2015, tied for the worst number of his career. He failed to record a top-10 finish.

Fastest: Tony Finau

7 of 8

2014-2015 average clubhead speed: 124.07 mph

2014-2015 average drive distance: 309.0 (7)

Smash factor (rank): 1.472 (T140)

Apex height (rank)116'2'' (18)

The fastest swinger on the PGA Tour in 2015, 6'4'' Tony Finau goes all out off the tee, as indicated by his smash factor. Finau recorded five top-10 finishes in 28 starts, and he was one of the brightest stars among the 2014-2015 rookie class.

Slowest: David Toms

8 of 8

2014-2015 average clubhead speed: 101.87 mph

2014-2015 average drive distance: 270.0 (184)

Smash factor (rank): 1.500 (2)

Apex height (rank): 96'5'' (T115)

Much like Justin Leonard, David Toms was never a particularly long hitter or hard swinger, and he's not surprisingly becoming shorter and slower with age. The slowest swinger on tour, Toms made just 11 of 21 cuts in 2015.
