Manchester United Transfer News: Major Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenJan 1, 2016

Manchester United could be successful in their bid to secure the services of Real Madrid stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, if the latest transfer rumours from Spain are to be believed. Meanwhile, the club has recalled Will Keane from his loan deal with Preston North End.

According to Pipi Estrada of El Chiringuito (h/t Sport's Alejandro Alcazar), Real president Florentino Perez is planning wholesale changes to his squad, and he has drawn up a shortlist of players who could leave the club in 2016, including Ronaldo and Ramos.

The Red Devils have been repeatedly linked with a move for their former star, per the Press Association (for ESPN FC), while Ramos was a reported target last summer before signing a new deal with Los Blancos, per Jeremy Cross of the Daily Star.

MADRID, SPAIN - NOVEMBER 3: Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid, Thiago Silva of PSG in action during the UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at Santiago Bernabeu stadium on November 3, 2015 in Madrid,

Per the report, Perez believes Ronaldo "has paid off the fee the club shelled out for him so, at 30, getting around €60m for him would be good business." Alcazar adds the president sees Ramos as "one of the heads of his opposition in the dressing room," which is why he wants to sell him. An offer of €40 million would do the trick.

Rumours of a veritable exodus at the Santiago Bernabeu seem a little far-fetched, to say the least, although it wouldn't be surprising if Perez decided to part ways with a handful of top stars.

Los Blancos have won just a single Liga title and one UEFA Champions League trophy since the 2011-12 season, and Perez has been forced to watch as rivals Barcelona established themselves as the top dogs in Spanish football.

As shared by Bleacher Report UK, the year 2015 was another stark reminder of the Catalans' dominance:

Real's current squad is clearly talented enough to compete with the Blaugrana, but for some reason, the current crop of players just can't get the better of their rivals. Changes are inevitable, and the departure of a number of veterans could finance said changes.

Of the two, Ronaldo seems the more likely to leave the Spanish capital. Per John Cross of the Daily Mirror, he's been heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, and the current Ballon d'Or holder fuelled those rumours himself when he shared a close moment with PSG manager Laurent Blanc, per Sport's Alejandro Alcazar.

The 30-year-old remains Real's top scoring option, but his value will start to decrease in the coming years as he nears the end of his career. If Perez is seriously considering a rebuild, the time to sell is now.

As you can see in the video below, Ronaldo is still a force to be reckoned with:

Ramos is mentioned as a potential candidate for a move as well, although Real will only sell the centre-back for a massive offer. Unlike Ronaldo, it's hard to see the 29-year-old leaving the club anytime soon.

He moved to the capital from Sevilla in 2005 and has been the club's most consistent defender ever since, becoming a fan-favourite and something of a club icon in the process. There are few better defenders in football right now, and given his age, he still has several years at the top level ahead of him.

A sale would likely net the club a hefty fee, but it would be almost impossible to find a replacement for the experienced defender. Someone like Aymeric Laporte of Athletic Bilbao may have the talent to become just as good as the Spain international, but he lacks the experience to be an effective replacement immediately.

PRESTON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 22: Baily Cargill of Bournemouth and Will Keane of Preston North End battle for the ball during the Capital One Cup third round match between Preston North End and AFC Bournemouth at Deepdale on September 22, 2015 in Preston,

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have made an odd move to try to address their scoring issues, bringing back Keane from his loan with Preston North End.

Per Sky Sports' Paul Vinnell, the 22-year-old has scored just two goals in 22 appearances for the Championship side, and Bleacher Report UK couldn't help but wonder whether there weren't any other options:

According to the Daily Mirror's David McDonnell, it was Keane himself who asked United manager Louis van Gaal for a chance to prove himself at Old Trafford, and the youngster must have said something to convince the United boss.

At the very least, he'll add depth and options to the attack, although fans probably hope his scoring form improves quickly.
