According to Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe, the uniforms are inspired by the sweaters worn by the teams in the 1924-25 season, the first season for the Bruins and the season after the Canadiens won their first Stanley Cup:
"Both teams found their inspiration there, the key elements that would be transferred to the threads and stitches, the colors and collars of their Winter Classic jerseys, sweaters that both teams think symbolize where they’ve been and who they are. These are the jerseys that will be worn New Year’s Day when the teams play in the annual outdoor event, this time at Gillette Stadium.
“It makes you realize how long this franchise has been going for, how many years, how many players have been through it, through the doors,” the Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron said. “Just makes you appreciate it even more.”
"
Indeed, few rivalries in the NHL are more intense than this one. There won't be much love lost when these teams meet, giving one of the coolest games in sports even more juice.
The Winter Classic already has a sentimental, retro feel. There's something about seeing hockey played outdoors that gives the game an entirely different feel. That's especially true when the elements come into play, as snowy conditions turn the game into a backyard pickup game.
Friday's game is supposed to be sunny and in the mid-40s. Both teams likely appreciate that fact.
Especially since both teams have had pretty grim forecasts of late and come into the game trending downward, having struggled throughout much of December. The Canadiens even stumbled through a six-game losing streak, ending it this week with a win over the Tampa Bay Lightning Monday.
A win over a rival on the national stage, especially in a game as special as the Winter Classic, could be just the spark one of these teams needs to snap out of their recent funks. Expect a fantastic matchup between these bitter rivals.
