Best Late Night Sports Moments of 2015

Giancarlo Ferrari-KingDec 31, 2015

Sports have quite the crossover appeal. The mystique, dollars and popularity that athletes have generated translate over to the world of late night television.

As 2015 wraps up, we thought it would be cool to go back and peep 10 of the best late night moments. By doing that, we made sure to touch on all of the popular shows, giving you the cream of the crop.

Here are the 10 clips that made the final cut.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: 'Superlatives'

1 of 10

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has done an excellent job of incorporating the world of sports into the show's skits.

Of all the stuff we've seen Fallon and the gang churn out, their "Superlatives" segments have stood the test of time. The concept is relatively simple: Athletes have their pictures posted up on the screen and Fallon drops bombs on each corresponding image.

Check out one of the best videos from the 2015 NFL season above.

Jimmy Kimmel Live!: 'Mean Tweets'

Jimmy Kimmel Live! has given us its own version of "Superlatives" in the form of "Mean Tweets." In all honesty, this segment is hilarious.

Athletes are forced to read horrible tweets about themselves, but seeing their reactions and responses is comedy gold.

Peep an outstanding NBA edition above this chunk of text.

Late Show with David Letterman: Bill Belichick

3 of 10

This doesn't necessarily classify as outrageous, but seeing New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on a late night talk show was definitely an amazing moment that brought about plenty of laughs.

As a man of few words, Coach Belichick made a rare appearance on the Late Show early on in 2015. The result of this showcase was a world-class exchange between then-host David Letterman and the Darth Maul of football.

Conan: Marshawn Lynch and Rob Gronkowski Play Mortal Kombat X

Video games have become a part of all our lives, even for professional athletes. So when Conan O'Brien got Marshawn Lynch and Rob Gronkowski to duel in Mortal Kombat X, we all got to watch two exuberant personalities take over the airwaves.

Beast Mode and Gronk need to get together more often. Maybe after their NFL careers finish up, the powers-that-be in TV land can give them their own show. For now, let's just appreciate what we have: a great skit on Conan.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: The Undertaker

5 of 10

Seeing a legend of sport like The Undertaker outside of the WWE is always cause for commotion. When he surfaced on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in November, the Undertaker brought about his own brand of Thanksgiving cheer.

By that, we mean he eviscerated a man dressed in a turkey suit with a Tombstone Piledriver. Is there a better way to usher in the holidays?

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert: 'Stephen vs. Stephen'

6 of 10

Stephen Curry vs. Stephen Colbert. Two men whose names are spelled the same yet pronounced differently.

The NBA's most destructive offensive player jumped on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and was challenged to a game of sock basketball. That showdown between the masterful Colbert and Curry was a great addition to end the duo's interview.

You'll be surprised at how this game finished up.

Saturday Night Live: 'WWE Promo Shoot'

7 of 10

Saturday Night Live has been hit-or-miss for a few seasons now, and that's cool. As much as we want the glory days to return, credit goes to the current cast for churning out some really dynamic content.

One of the better skits in 2015 was when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson played host. His WWE promo spoof with Bobby Moynihan was, in the words of Donald Trump, "tremendous."

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: 'Faceketball'

8 of 10

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has built a strong reputation for getting celebrities and athletes to partake in extravagant games.

When LeBron James stopped by over the summer, Fallon introduced "Faceketball" to the world. Pitting Fallon against King James in this hybrid version of basketball turned out to be another great concept by the writers over there.

Check out which warrior prevailed in the clip above.

Saturday Night Live: Mayweather vs. Pacquiao

9 of 10

Saturday Night Live had the daunting task of going up against the biggest sporting event of 2015: Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao.

In an attempt to secure viewers, the writers poked fun of the upcoming bout in a ridiculous cold opening. We got to see Pacquiao portrayed by a woman, a faux Justin Bieber cameo and a pretty accurate snapshot of how the fight would go down—minus the winner, of course.

Jimmy Kimmel Live!: Guillermo Takes on the NBA Finals

10 of 10

Jimmy Kimmel's henchman Guillermo has been a primo addition to the late night show. The comedic chops he brings along with him translate beautifully in any situation.

When Guillermo was tasked with heading down to media day at the NBA Finals, we saw him at the top of his game. Enjoy as this Kimmel associate turns the hoops association on its head.
