Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants Betting Odds, Analysis, NFL Pick

OddsShark.comDec 29, 2015

The Philadelphia Eagles (6-9) will try to defeat the New York Giants (6-9) for the 13th time in 16 meetings when they square off at MetLife Stadium in the final game for both NFC East teams Sunday.

Each has lost two in a row to fall out of contention for the division title, which was won last Saturday by the Washington Redskins with a 38-24 victory as 3.5-point road underdogs at Philadelphia. However, the Eagles have gone 12-3 straight up and against the spread in the last 15 games versus the Giants.

Point spread: The Giants opened as 3.5-point favorites; the total was 52 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. (Line updates and matchup report)

Why the Eagles can cover the spread

Outside of Philly’s dominance recently in the series, head coach Chip Kelly has a tremendous amount of pressure to win here considering how his team has underperformed overall this season. After signing 2014 NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray away from the Dallas Cowboys and acquiring quarterback Sam Bradford from the St. Louis Rams, the Eagles should have run away with the division this year.

Instead, Kelly is left to wonder “what if” after he sent running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills in a trade and dealt quarterback Nick Foles for Bradford. If Philadelphia loses this game, there is a possibility Kelly could be let go, or he might leave the team instead. Regardless, the Eagles will want to go out winners here and have beaten New York in seven of the last eight road meetings.

Why the Giants can cover the spread

The Giants were without Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. due to a suspension in last week’s 49-17 road loss to the Minnesota Vikings as seven-point underdogs, and he should be very motivated to beat Philly in the season finale. There is also speculation that head coach Tom Coughlin could be coaching his last game with the team, so that could also inspire the players to send him off as a winner.

With nothing else on the line in this divisional matchup, siding with the better coach and quarterback (Eli Manning) at home would seem to be the smart move. Manning has quietly had one of his best seasons statistically, although he would never admit to it being enjoyable because his team will not be in the postseason for the fourth straight year. However, expect Manning to treat this like a playoff game and go for the victory.

Smart pick

Again, taking the side with the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach (Coughlin) and quarterback (Manning) is the easy pick. Kelly’s tenure in Philly looks like it is coming to a disastrous close and could end before anybody knows if Coughlin is returning. Back New York to come through with a win and cover as a small home favorite.
