NFL Rumors: Latest on Futures of Sean Payton, Drew Brees and Jim Tomsula
Major changes could be on the horizon for the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers.
An era that included the franchise's lone Super Bowl could be coming to an end in the Big Easy, while a short-lived tenure in San Francisco could be done after just one year.
Oh, and Mike Holmgren may be involved.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Here are your latest rumors around the NFL world as we near the end of the 2015 regular season.
Chargers a Possible Landing Spot for Sean Payton
If you ask Sean Payton what he wants, he'd like to stay as the Saints head coach beyond this season.
That doesn't mean that teams won't offer Payton the world to leave the Crescent City and jump ship elsewhere. One team that could be in play, should it be available, is the San Diego Chargers, per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport:
So, there's some things to clear up here. One, the Chargers would need to obviously relieve current head coach Mike McCoy of his duties. McCoy is not a bad coach. He has a playoff win under his belt and, before this season, had back-to-back winning seasons.
An injury-plagued season has made this one to forget for the Chargers, but it doesn't seem right to let go of McCoy. However, if the Chargers go all in for Payton, it could be a good business move if they move to Los Angeles.
To get a Super Bowl-winning coach in the fold, the kind of coach that can get Philip Rivers to the next level, would be a perfect way to usher in a new era in the Chargers franchise.
Drew Brees Can Stay in New Orleans If He Takes a Discount
The Saints' superstar quarterback is not the reason why New Orleans is missing the playoffs this year. He's thrown for 4,547 yards and 31 touchdowns on a team that's largely failed because of its defense.
But should Brees wish to remain a Saint, and possibly retire as one, he'll need to take a huge pay cut, per Rapoport:
Rapoport also noted that the Saints feel like Brees maximized his contract, which made it difficult for New Orleans to address any needs for depth.
Asking Brees to take a pay cut when he's not the root of the problem is a huge favor to ask by the Saints. New Orleans' defense has ranked in the bottom five three of the last four years, and the Saints missed the playoffs in each of those seasons.
If New Orleans moves on from Brees, it better hope Garrett Grayson is the future, because Brees still has a few good years left.
Mike Holmgren Interested in 49ers Head Coaching Position
Jim Tomsula is not concerned about next season, but that doesn't mean the San Francisco 49ers wouldn't look for an upgrade.
If the 49ers brass thinks a change is in order after one season, Mike Holmgren would like to be included in that, per MMQB's Robert Klemko:
Holmgren hasn't coached since 2008, his last season as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. He had a stint as the president of the Cleveland Browns back in 2009.
It would be an odd move should the 49ers fire Tomsula after one year. Even though San Francisco hasn't played well, Blaine Gabbert has become a decent quarterback under Tomsula, and the 49ers have been competitive for much of the season.
But if Holmgren becomes a realistic option, the 49ers can't expect a quick turnaround. There would have to be a complete overhaul of players that fit Holmgren's West Coast style of play. It would take at least two years for a complete rebuild.
Crazier things have happened, though.
