Freeman Signs with Colts

Tuesday, Dec. 29

Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star reported Freeman signed with the Colts, giving the team another healthy quarterback to go with Stephen Morris. Ben Volin of the Boston Globe confirmed the report.

His one-game dalliance in Minnesota came after an ugly divorce in Tampa Bay in 2013, where he spent his first four-plus NFL seasons. After he became a breakout star in throwing for 25 touchdowns against six interceptions in 2010, the Buccaneers released Freeman after becoming disenchanted with his inconsistency.

His first four seasons saw him produce a 78-63 ratio of touchdowns to interceptions, but he was a wildly different player from year to year. In odd-numbered seasons (2009, 2011), Freeman had just 26 touchdowns against 40 picks. In even-numbered years (2010, 2012), he tossed 52 touchdowns and was intercepted only 23 times.

The New York Giants and Miami Dolphins both picked him up in the last two offseasons but came away unimpressed. New York released him before he even made it to training camp, and Miami moved on after Freeman threw four picks in 48 pass attempts during the 2015 preseason.

“It was a shame to see it end the way it did,” Freeman said in September, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “But I thought all the guys at the end were really battling. I want to keep playing, no question. I love playing football. At the end of the day, I’m going to give it all I can until I exhaust every option.”

Freeman has since spent time with the Brooklyn Bolts of the startup Fall Experimental Football League. While it's unlikely he'll make much of a difference for Indianapolis, the Colts are in desperate need of an option at quarterback after injuries to Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst.
