Raiders Could Use Charles Woodson as WR, Returner vs. Chargers

A vintage Charles Woodson would be a Christmas miracle—but apparently not one out of reach.

The Oakland Raiders may use the retiring defensive back as a wide receiver and returner against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday, per the San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur, harking back to Woodson's days in a Michigan Wolverines uniform.

Although the veteran hasn't caught a pass since 2000—just one of two career receptions for 27 yards, each made during his first stint with the Raiders—Oakland has had the trick up its sleeve for quite a while.

"That's been in discussions ever since we started this season," offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave told reporters. "We may have something up our sleeve. It might be the right time to do it."

According to Tafur, the nine-time Pro Bowl selection (including 2016) warms up with the receivers before each game before eventually joining the defensive backs.

Woodson returned punts and played wide receiver in addition to his role in the secondary while at Michigan, earning the nod as the Heisman Trophy winner in 1997—the last recipient who was not a quarterback or running back.
