Christian Eriksen Transfer Rumours: Latest News, Speculation on Tottenham Star

Christopher SimpsonDec 23, 2015

European giants Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly "monitoring" Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen ahead of potential summer bids, though the Lilywhites are "keen" to offer him a new contract at White Hart Lane.

According to Tom Collomosse of the London Evening Standard, the Dane is hoping for a substantial pay-rise—which the likes of Juve and PSG could easily afford—but has not yet been able to agree terms with Tottenham.

Per the report, Eriksen currently has two-and-a-half years left on his £30,000 a week deal.

As Collomosse notes, his wages are "some way short" of those enjoyed by team-mates such as Hugo Lloris, Erik Lamela and Mousa Dembele, so with Eriksen targeting parity with those top earners, his demands would see his weekly pay increase by more than double if met.

Further, both clubs are admirers of the 23-year-old with PSG having enquired about him in 2013 when he swapped Amsterdam for north London, while the Bianconeri did the same in the summer.

Per the report, Les Parisiens coach Laurent Blanc said of Eriksen in 2014: "I have always liked Eriksen. At Ajax, Eriksen was already good. In England he only got better. Everyone can see he understands his profession well. He always sees the solution and can create something at any time in the game. It would be nice if he would soon play with us."

Eriksen is one of Spurs' key players thanks to his creativity and significant goal threat from distance—particularly from his remarkably accurate set pieces.

The midfielder has scored three times this season and assisted eight in all competitions. WhoScored's Ben McAleer notes how he is improving his ability to make incisive contributions to the team:

Eriksen has also shown incredible work rate on a number of occasions, per OptaJoe:

Spurs' desire to keep such a key player is understandable, and with some of Europe's biggest clubs eyeing their star, it's likely they will eventually acquiesce to his wage demands.

Doing so might not prevent him from making the step up to an elite club later in his career, but at the very least, it will likely keep him at White Hart Lane for a little longer and give Spurs an improved bargaining position if PSG or Juventus come knocking.
