Manchester United Transfer News: Juan Mata, Ander Herrera Exit Rumours Emerge

Rory MarsdenDec 22, 2015

Louis van Gaal is reportedly facing a "Spanish revolt" at Manchester United with midfield duo Juan Mata and Ander Herrera prepared to quit the club should he stay on as manager.

Neil Ashton in the Daily Mail reported that both players are dissatisfied with their "confused playing role" under the Dutchman, and they fear their spots in Spain's Euro 2016 squad could be threatened as a result.

The report added that Mata and Herrera are prepared to leave United in the summer should Van Gaal still be in charge.

The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss is under huge pressure at Old Trafford following a third defeat in a row against Norwich City on Saturday, per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe:

His playing style has been widely criticised by fans, and he certainly does not seem to have got the best out of Mata and Herrera.

Mata has started every Premier League game so far this season but has most often been fielded on the right flank as opposed to his favoured No. 10 role, per WhoScored.com.

Meanwhile, Herrera regularly struggles to make Van Gaal's starting XI despite showing more impressive form than many others when given his opportunities, per ESPN's Alex Shaw:

The 26-year-old has made only six Premier League starts this season but still managed to return two goals and two assists, per WhoScored

He is one of United's most consistently inventive players, and it is baffling that he has to work so hard to earn a regular spot in Van Gaal's side.

Herrera would undoubtedly be a starter under many other managers, and it is no surprise that he is unhappy in the current United setup.

Chelsea's recently departed manager, Jose Mourinho, is the front-runner to replace Van Gaal in the United dugout should the Old Trafford hierarchy swing the proverbial axe, per Duncan Wright in the Sun.

The Portuguese's arrival at Old Trafford would likely improve Herrera's prospects, but that would surely be bad news for Mata given the pair's previous relationship at Chelsea, per football writer Serge Adam:

Mata was sold by Mourinho to United midway through 2013-14 despite being voted Chelsea's Player of the Season in the two previous terms.

While the 27-year-old is reportedly unhappy now at Old Trafford, he would surely benefit more personally from Van Gaal remaining as manager than Mourinho coming into the club.
