Celebrities Who Dominated Sports in 2015

Laura DeptaDec 23, 2015

Drake dominated sports in 2015, just like he did in 2014, 2013 and...you get the picture. Still, there were some newcomers to the celebrity-sports mashup. Comedian Amy Schumer became besties with LeBron James, and actress Olivia Munn took on an ESPN reporter.

Newcomer or old stalwart, the following 12 celebrities popped up in sports news quite often in 2015 for one reason or another. Some had beefs with athletes, and others started dating them. Some are ardent fans, and others have a secret friendship with Jerry Jones.

Here it goes: when sports and stars collide, 2015 edition.

Lil B

1 of 12

Rapper Lil B first emerged in NBA news back in 2011 amid a feud with Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant, but 2015 was a real breakout year for him.

Lil B simmered on Durant and moved on to Houston Rockets guard James Harden. According to the rapper, Harden's celebratory "cooking dance" was stolen from him. The more Harden used it, the longer Lil B remained in the sports spotlight.

He also accepted an invitation to try out for the Philadelphia 76ers' D-League team, so there was that.

Khloe Kardashian

2 of 12

Speaking of James Harden, Khloe Kardashian is notable in the sports world for her romantic history with athletes. In 2015, she began dating the Houston Rockets guard (much to the dismay of Rockets fans everywhere). She had a lot to say (some NSFW) in December when blame fell on her for the team's woes.

Ongoing news regarding former NBA star Lamar Odom's health issues is also laden with references to Kardashian, who is his estranged wife.

Snoop Dogg

3 of 12

Rapper Snoop Dogg is a noted sports fan. The Pittsburgh Steelers supporter made his feelings about Deflategate abundantly clear with a NSFW Instagram post and criticized Steelers kicker Josh Scobee after he missed two critical kicks in an October game (also NSFW—come on, Snoop).

Besides his general fandom, Snoop is also heavily involved with youth football. He owns a youth league, and his son, Cordell Broadus, was once committed to play at UCLA. TMZ Sports reported in February that the Snoop Youth Football League sent 20 players to Division I programs this year.

Amy Schumer

4 of 12

Comedian Amy Schumer dominated everything in 2015, and sports were no exception. She starred in the Judd Apatow hit Trainwreck along with supporting actor extraordinaire LeBron James.

Schumer also made a hilarious parody of Friday Night Lights, danced on stage at Wrigley Field and struck up a social media friendship with UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm.

Amy Schumer for president.

Jerry Seinfeld

5 of 12

With the resurgence of the New York Mets in 2015 came the return of superfan Jerry Seinfeld to the spotlight.

The legendary comedian wore a pair of custom Nikes throughout the season hoping to bring good luck to the team, per ESPN.com. His reaction to their clinching victory in the National League Championship Series was perfection, and his slow-clap game was on point.

The Mets came up short in the end, but Seinfeld had a pretty good October, for the most part.

GOP Candidates

6 of 12

Donald Trump has largely dominated political news at the tail end of 2015, and that includes sports. Trump famously earned an endorsement (but not a real endorsement) from his friend, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, in September. His politics have also seeped into the sports world, evidenced by his comments regarding Muslim athletes and an LPGA tournament held at one of his courses.

It's not just the Donald, however. Fellow GOP candidates have been all over sports as well. New Jersey governor Chris Christie was spotted in a now-famous bro hug with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in January. During a presidential debate, America learned Jeb Bush plays fantasy football and thinks daily fantasy sports could use a little "regulation."

Jay Z

7 of 12

Rapper Jay Z is another perennial fixture in sports, but 2015 in particular saw the continued growth of his sports management agency, Roc Nation Sports.

The agency added several notable athletes to its roster, including NBA rookies Justise Winslow and Willie Cauley-Stein and St. Louis Rams running back Todd Gurley. Jay even showed up to the Rams' Week 14 game against the Detroit Lions to support the new signee, and he celebrated with the team in the locker room post-win.

Roc Nation Sports also gained independence by officially parting ways with Creative Artists Agency, an firm that previously handled some of its sports deals.

Olivia Munn

8 of 12

Actress Olivia Munn entered the collective consciousness of the sports world when she started dating Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Since then, she's been seen at Packers games and other events with her beau—the ESPY Awards, a Wisconsin basketball game—and her Instagram is full of silly posts with the NFL MVP.

Munn was also the poster woman for this year's edition of "Blame the Celebrity Girlfriend" for team losses. There's one every year, and it was nice to see Munn fight back this time.

Will Ferrell

9 of 12

Comedian Will Ferrell played in 10 spring training games in one day back in March. That alone is enough to say he dominated sports in 2015.

Beyond that, however, Ferrell is also just a general presence in sports. The noted USC football supporter raced a fan after a game against Stanford in September. When GQ named him "Comedian of the Year," Ferrell took jabs at then-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in his acceptance speech.

He also filmed a scene for his new film Daddy's Home at a Los Angeles Lakers game, an experience he described as "spectacular," per Francesca Bacardi of E Online.

President Obama

10 of 12

In 2015, the POTUS played golf with NBA MVP Stephen Curry, sat courtside at the Chicago Bulls' season opener, hosted the U.S. women's national team at the White House and compared himself to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

He also filled out his annual March Madness bracket, told Deflategate jokes and generally continued to dominate sports like no other president in recent memory.

Taylor Swift

11 of 12

Taylor Swift was the new Rihanna in sports this year—everywhere you looked, she was there. Or perhaps more accurately, the sports world came to her.

Over the course her 1989 World Tour, Tay invited many-an-athlete to join her on stage. The lucky honorees included Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, the U.S. women's national team and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade. The Heat star even surprised Swift with her own personalized jersey. NBAers Russell Westbrook and Jimmy Butler are also counted among her many athlete fans.

Not only that, but Swifty's tour was the subject of a notable 2015 sports curse. For instance, the Houston Astros rescheduled one of her October concert dates to account for the possibility of a playoff appearance. Later, the team sputtered significantly and barely edged into the postseason.

Drake

12 of 12

As a notable celebrity fan, Drake has been a figure in sports for a long time. His hometown Toronto Raptors even hosted a "Drake Night" in November. Still, 2015 was perhaps a signature year for the rapper, due in large part to his rumored romance with tennis star Serena Williams.

In addition to his usual attendance at Raptors games and elbow-rubbing with big shots like Steph Curry, Drake became a staple at Williams' tournaments over the season. In fact, some fans even blamed him for her shocking loss at the U.S. Open.

Besides all that, Drake and fellow rapper Meek Mill engaged in a beef over the origin of song lyrics, a beef in which many athletes took sides on.
