Texas A&M Offense Leading the Charge, Seems Poised for Big 12 Dark Horse Run

Jeff ShullSep 23, 2009

After putting up 606 yards of offense on New Mexico, the Aggies followed that up with 573 yards against Utah State.

The Battle for Aggie supremacy was won by Old Army.

Utah State was in the game for much of the first half, even holding a 14-7 lead at one point. But the Aggies pulled away in the second quarter and were leading at half time, 24-14.

The biggest surprise came from Uzoma Nwachukwu, who scored on his first four touches. He had a touchdown catch for 35 yards, a 39-yard touchdown run, another touchdown catch of 16 yards, and then a third, 50-yard touchdown catch to top it off.

I think it's safe to say he and Jerrod Johnson have developed chemistry in their short time together.

Nwachukwu was brought in as the No. 36 wide receiver in the country and was also recruited by the likes of Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Missouri.

He was not used as such at his high school, but he was seen as having the potential to be a dangerous vertical threat with his unmatched speed.

He has the ability to beat corners in man-to-man coverage, but he also possesses the ability to go across the middle and has a feel for finding holes in zones.

Nwachukwu had a coming out party against Utah State—let's hope he can put up these type of numbers all year.

With the recent news reported that Jeff Fuller is going to miss four to six weeks with a broken fibula, Nwachukwu will have to step up big time. They play UAB, then Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and Texas Tech in that time frame.

Jerrod Johnson is exceeding expectations, to say the least. He has racked up 671 passing yards and six touchdowns in the first two games. He has also given the running game a boost, along with Cyrus Gray and freshman Christine Michael.

Michael has lived up to the hype so far; being the best recruit the Aggies have snatched up since Mike Goodson, it is nice to see him panning out.

So far Michael has 28 carries for 187 yards, that is 6.7 yards per carry. He and Cyrus Gray are making the running game relevant once again, after a year that saw the Aggies at the bottom of the FBS.

It was embarrassing for an Aggie team not to be able to run the ball, considering they were in the top 15 or 20 every year under Franchione in that category, and have a history of being a great running team.

It seems they have put that year behind them and are making the most of 2009. Gig 'Em Ags, BTHO UAB!
