Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Robert Lewandowski, Marcos Rojo Rumours

Tom SunderlandDec 20, 2015

Latest speculation claims Manchester United are "crazy" to cut a deal for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, while the club's acquisition of former Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo could be complicating things.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo (h/t Metro's Tom Olver), the Red Devils are desperate to add a genuine world-class name to their ranks in 2016, and £51 million-rated Lewandowski tops the billing.

The Poland international has 23 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions this season and played an essential role in guiding Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich back to the Bundesliga summit.

Rumours of interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have grown in recent weeks, but the striker addressed such speculation in a recent interview with Spanish newspaper AS, where he proclaimed:

"Every year these kinds of rumours come around, and I don't want to answer questions about them always. What's important to me is football. It's not an easy situation for me, so I prefer to say nothing."

It's intriguing that Lewandowksi neglected to give a definitive "no" on the topic, although one can't imagine the player is too disgruntled at the Allianz Arena, where he regularly contends for the biggest prizes in European football.

The BBC's John Bennett highlighted Lewandowski as one of the continent's in-form talents this season after netting 15 goals in his first 16 league games of the campaign:

Manchester United understandably wish to keep adding to their attack after Memphis Depay's beleaguered start to life in the Premier League and Wayne Rooney's worrying plummet, managing just two league goals this season.

Meanwhile, the Mirror's Liam Canning has noted the potential arrival of Pep Guardiola at United's helm next summer could have a hand in deciding whether he's joined by any Allianz Arena alumni:

Lewandowski is sure to top that list should the Red Devils look to plunder the German giants, with the lucrative contracts on offer in England sure to tempt one of the Bundesliga's deadliest figures.

Elsewhere, the case relating to Sporting's sale of Rojo in the summer of 2014 is nearing a verdict, per Portuguese newspaper A Bola (h/t Sport Witness), in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. An extract read:

"

The Argentine defender had been at Sporting for a couple of years, having moved from Spartak Moscow in July 2012. Sporting's acquisition of the player was funded by Doyen, a sport investment group, and that agreement would see Doyen get 75% of any fee Sporting later received for the player.

Sporting got Rojo without having to pay a big fee, but it would be Doyen who largely benefitted from a big money future sale. As Rojo's transfer to Manchester United was progressing, Sporting ripped up the agreement with Doyen and refused to give them the 75%, saying they'd used underhand tactics to push Rojo out of the club.

"

According to the report, any verdict that rules against Sporting could see the club forced to sell during the winter transfer window, something that might be of interest to United, with whom they share a fruitful bond.

Doyen exercise a large amount of power in Portuguese football, and although Rojo's Old Trafford future isn't in any danger, his transfer could have a large impact on any future arrivals at Old Trafford.
