Saturday Recap
Carlos Moya kicked off the proceedings for the Slammers and made short work of Fabrice Santoro, breaking him three times on the way to a comfortable 6-2 victory.
Stan Wawrinka's set with Bernard Tomic was a much tighter affair, with both players playing some exquisite shots, according to the tournament's official Twitter feed:
The pair broke each other twice apiece to force a tiebreaker, which Wawrinka eventually won.
Belinda Bencic then significantly increased the Slammers' lead to nine with a 6-2 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova, the former breaking twice while the latter was made to rue six missed opportunities to reply.
The Aces managed to fight back and claim the last two sets, but solid performances from the Slammers ensured they only won 6-4 and 6-5—nowhere near enough to eat into their considerable lead:
Earlier, the Mavericks put an end to the Royals' hopes as they beat them in a thrilling encounter.
James Blake and Jarmila Gajdosova's wins in the men's legends and women's singles, respectively, gave the Mavericks a five-game lead after two sets, before Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic levelled the scoring with a 6-1 win over Gajdosova and Edouard Roger-Vasselin:
Roger-Vasselin and Treat Huey then got the Mavericks' noses in front once again as they took a 6-4 victory over Nestor and Marin Cilic, with this rally proving one of the highlights:
To force a shootout, Cilic then needed to reverse that scoreline against Roger-Vasselin in the men's singles, and the Croatian duly did so.
He was unable to overcome Ivo Karlovic in the first-to-10 shootout—the first in the competition so far—though, with Karlovic sealing the tightest of wins in style:
The final will be held on Sunday, December 20, at 8 a.m. GMT (3 a.m. ET, 4 p.m. local).
The Aces have been comfortably the best team throughout the tournament with eight wins from 11 matches, but with the Slammers now having both confidence and momentum behind them they could well produce another big upset.
