A long trip to Madison Square Garden in New York City ended on a winning note for the Utah Utes as they upset the seventh-ranked Duke Blue Devils 77-75 in overtime at the Ameritas Insurance Classic on Saturday.
Despite foul trouble throughout the game, Austrian seven-footer Jakob Poeltl led the way for the Utes, posting his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds. In addition to his offensive contribution, Poeltl made several crucial stops to halt a second-half rally by the undermanned Blue Devils.
Duke hit the floor without its best player, the injured Amile Jefferson, and received a sub-par performance from flu-stricken Grayson Allen, who managed just seven points on 3-of-18 shooting. The Blue Devils were able to take advantage of Utah's 19 turnovers to stay in the game, and freshman Luke Kennard had a career-best 24 points, including a 12-of-13 showing from the free-throw line.
Utah rose to 9-2, while Duke dropped to 9-2.
