Kyler Murray Transferring from Texas A&M: Latest Details and Reaction

Tim DanielsDec 17, 2015

Highly touted Texas A&M freshman quarterback Kyler Murray reportedly requested to transfer from the Aggies.

Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com first reported the decision Thursday and stated it was "final." The school confirmed the transfer in a press release, per ESPN's Sam Khan Jr.:

Murray released a statement on his decision on Twitter:

ESPN.com's Gerry Hamilton broke down why Murray decided to leave:

"

Uncertainty with the direction of Texas A&M's offense, the future of the offensive coaching staff, trust issues between the quarterbacks and coaches and how the quarterbacks were utilized were among the concerns that led to both Murray's and Allen's transfers, sources indicated to ESPN.com.

"

Murray is also a coveted commodity on the baseball diamond, but he opted out of the 2015 MLB draft to continue his career at Texas A&M. Dan Wolken of USA Today discussed how that issue could have played a role:

Troy Hughes of 105.3 The Fan noted he believes Murray will pursue baseball, heading to junior college and then the MLB draft.

Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Texas and Oklahoma are among Murray's potential landing spots but added Texas A&M may block both of those destinations. He added, "Don't rule out just playing baseball."

Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports provided more details:

It's a significant loss for the Aggies on multiple fronts.

Most notably, Murray arrived to Texas A&M as a 5-star prospect and the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. So, while he struggled at times in limited duty as a freshman, his long-term upside is still intriguing.

What makes the situation even more concerning is the fact Kyle Allen, who spent most of the season as the starter, announced last week he's also transferring. The duo combined to throw 22 of the team's 23 touchdown passes during the regular season.

Jake Hubenak is the only other quarterback to throw a touchdown for the Aggies this season and will likely take the reins of the offense until the dust settles.

The mass exodus at quarterback puts even more pressure on head coach Kevin Sumlin, as Matt Barrie of ESPN spotlighted:

Murray clearly has some decisions to make about his own athletic future, but apparently Texas A&M no longer plays into those plans. He's got a lot of natural talent, so it's important for him to find a comfort zone to begin developing that, regardless of the sport he chooses.

As for the Aggies, it's been a forgettable week to say the least. Now they have to find a way to rebuild the quarterback depth chart in the current recruiting cycle while still preparing for the Music City Bowl against Louisville on Dec. 30.
