Barry Cofield to Giants: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Mike ChiariDec 17, 2015

The New York Giants signed a familiar face Thursday, as they inked veteran tackle Barry Cofield to provide depth along their defensive line.

The team announced the move, per Michael Eisen, on the heels of releasing safety Brandon Meriweather to create a roster spot for Cofield.

The 31-year-old Cofield played for the Giants from 2006-2010, winning Super Bowl XLII with the G-Men, before a four-year stint with the Washington Redskins from 2011-2014.

Big Blue selected Cofield in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL draft, and in five seasons with the franchise, he missed just one game.

Cofield only appeared in eight games for the Redskins last season, though, and he has yet to play in 2015. Despite the long layoff, New York decided to turn to a player who is familiar with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's scheme.

According to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, Cofield also promises to be a great locker room presence for the Giants:

New York needed some help at tackle with Johnathan Hankins out for the season and Markus Kuhn nursing a knee injury, and Cofield brings plenty to the table with 19.5 career sacks and a world championship to his credit.

The Giants are in a major playoff battle currently, as they are tied atop the NFC East with the Washington Redskins and the Philadelphia Eagles.

While the addition of Cofield may not put them over the top, he knows how to perform in high-pressure situations, and he is a player Spagnuolo and head coach Tom Coughlin can trust down the stretch.
