Monday night's 2-1 loss at Leicester saw Mourinho's side, the reigning league champions, sit just one point outside the relegation places ahead of Saturday's visit by Sunderland.
For some, the news came as a huge shock:
"People are quick to forget these days. He did so much for that club it's their loss. #Mourinho

But others saw it coming:
Opposition fans were quick to add their opinions:
"Mourinho has been sacked. Christmas can begin. pic.twitter.com/PyVoyaarxF

It didn't take long before everybody started asking, "What next?" For both Mourinho...
"If Alex Ferguson wants to repair the damage for his cronyism with the whole Moyes debacle, this is his opportunity #Mourinho
— Gilbert Kyem Jnr. (@GIlbertKyemJnr) December 17, 2015"
...and for Chelsea:
"Mourinho sacked, kinda saw it coming ngl. BUT JUST IMAGINE IF THEY GET RODGERS
— LfcFan (@hadiyaapopstar) December 17, 2015"
Or, in fact, for the entire football coaching elite:
Of course, it's not all terrible for Jose:
But in the meantime, there's just one enduring image:
