Christine Michael Released by Redskins: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Alec NathanDec 15, 2015

Christine Michael once looked like a promising young running back prospect, but the Washington Redskins became the third team in three months to sever ties with the 25-year-old when they released him from their practice squad Tuesday, according to USA Today's Tom Pelissero

The Redskins added Michael to their practice squad in mid-November after the Dallas Cowboys briefly experimented with the third-year running back, but the 2013 second-round pick simply hasn't been able to stick with a single franchise since getting traded by the Seattle Seahawks.

In Washington, Michael was never elevated from the practice squad to the active roster since the Redskins were replete with solid runners in Alfred Morris, Matt Jones, Chris Thompson and Pierre Thomas.

CBS Sports' Will Brinson noted Michael has yet to live up to his billing as a future stud:

The Seahawks gave up on Michael when they dealt him to the Cowboys for a conditional 2016 seventh-round pick prior to the start of the regular season, and he failed to seize a wide-open opportunity with Dallas.

As former starter Joseph Randle sputtered before getting cut in early November, Michael looked like he had the raw physical capabilities to emerge as a feature back or at least snatch up meaningful carries in a timeshare.

The Cowboys ultimately turned toward veteran Darren McFadden, who has maintained a grip on the starting gig ever since. Michael was relegated to a limited change-of-pace role before the Cowboys released him following a reported violation of team rules.

The Star-Telegram's Clarence E. Hill Jr. noted Michael's release was due to a blend of poor performance and, citing TMZ Sports, his inability to wear the proper suit leading up to the team's Week 10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"We evaluate our players every minute of every day," head coach Jason Garrett said, per Hill. "We evaluate our players in meetings, in walkthroughs, on the practice field, the opportunity to get in games, how they interact with their teammates. The body of work of each of those guys. We evaluate all of it."

During his brief stint in Dallas, Michael compiled 15 carries for 51 yards.

The Texas A&M product once packed plenty of promise in his 5'10'', 220-pound frame, but he evidently hasn't been consistent enough on the practice field to garner serious consideration as a rotational runner.

Based on his track record of instability, Michael seems like he'll be a running back teams take a flier on in training camp next summer and not much more.
